Looks how to spot one

Colourswhiteblackblue-greyyellow2

Personality what they are like

Semi-aggressive but curious. It is usually fine with other small fish, though it may nip at shrimps and clams.34

Daily activity how busy a day looks

Active in daytime, moving with fine control of its pectoral fins, even backwards.23

Grooming and care the hands-on bits

Rated easy care. Best in a fish-only tank or a reef with caution. When moving it, use a water-filled container rather than a net so it cannot gulp air.34

Home where they are happiest

A tank of at least 30 US gallons (about 115 L). Saltwater at about 23 to 26 °C (74 to 78 °F), pH 8.1 to 8.4, specific gravity 1.020 to 1.026. Wild fish live among coral heads and rocks of lagoon and seaward reefs at 1 to 55 m.341

Food basics what goes in the bowl

Feed meaty marine foods such as flakes, pellets, brine and mysis shrimp, and chopped seafood, plus shelled foods like clams and mussels. Wild fish graze algae and also eat tunicates and small invertebrates.341

Company who they like around

In the wild a territorial male keeps a harem of several females. In aquariums it is usually kept singly.21

The story where it all began

Pieter Bleeker described the species in 1853. It is named after the Dutch naturalist François Valentijn, who lived from 1666 to 1727.21

Fun facts for the dinner table

  1. 1

A harmless filefish, Paraluteres prionurus, copies its look so predators leave it alone.2

  2. 2

It can puff itself up to three or four times its normal size.2

  3. 3

Spawning happens in daylight, roughly between 8 am and 3:30 pm, all year round.2

  4. 4

It is named after the Dutch naturalist François Valentijn.2

Owner questions the things everyone asks

How often should I feed my Valentini Puffer?

Feed small amounts once or twice a day. Furry Diary's starting plan is to feed daily. Always check the food label and ask your vet for exact portions.34 Furry Diary plan

What does a Valentini Puffer eat, and what should it never eat?

It eats meaty marine foods like flakes, pellets, brine and mysis shrimp, chopped seafood, and shelled foods such as clams and mussels. It also grazes algae. Never feed it anything that could cause it to gulp air, and avoid foods not meant for marine fish.341

How much space does a Valentini Puffer need?

A tank of at least 30 US gallons (about 115 L) is needed. This gives it room to swim and explore.341

What temperature, light or water does a Valentini Puffer need?

Keep saltwater at 23 to 26 °C (74 to 78 °F), pH 8.1 to 8.4, and specific gravity 1.020 to 1.026. It needs a marine setup with stable conditions.341

How often should I clean a Valentini Puffer's home?

Furry Diary's starting plan suggests a weekly glass clean and water test, with a 10 to 20% water change every two weeks. Top up evaporation daily with fresh RO water. Furry Diary plan

Can a Valentini Puffer live with others?

It is semi-aggressive but usually fine with other small fish, though it may nip at shrimps and clams. In aquariums it is often kept singly, as in the wild a male keeps a harem of females.3421

How long does a Valentini Puffer live?

With good care, it can live 5 to 10 years.34

Can I handle a Valentini Puffer?

It is best not to handle it. When moving it, use a water-filled container rather than a net so it cannot gulp air. It can inflate as a defense, so gentle handling is important.34
