Marlieri Julie
Julidochromis marlieri Poll, 1956
Also called Marlier's Julie, Spotted Julie, Chequered Julie, Checkerboard Julie
From Endemic to Lake Tanganyika in East Africa, on rocky shorelines in fairly deep water; FishBase places it in the northwestern part of the lake, while Seriously Fish reports a patchier spread including northern and southern areas.123
At a glance the quick version
Looks how to spot one
Slender, elongated cave-dwelling cichlid
A long, narrow fish built for slipping through rock crevices, with long dorsal and anal fins; adult females end up larger than males.234
Personality what they are like
A characterful fish that claims its own patch of rockwork and guards it keenly; it is happiest as a settled pair and gets on with similar-sized Tanganyikan cichlids that use other parts of the tank.214
Daily activity how busy a day looks
Spends its day close to the rocks and the bottom, exploring caves and crevices rather than cruising in open water.12
Grooming and care the hands-on bits
Keep the water hard, alkaline and well oxygenated with steady, regular water changes; keep only one Julidochromis species per tank so regional forms stay pure.2
Home where they are happiest
Roughly 110 litres (120 x 30 cm base) for one pair, more for several adults; a sandy bottom with stacked rocks forming plenty of caves. Temperature about 22-27 C, pH 7.5-9.5, hardness about 10-25 dGH (FishBase gives a softer 3-12 dH range).21
Food basics what goes in the bowl
A small-item feeder: offer a mix of live and frozen foods with a quality dried food, plus some plant matter such as spirulina or blanched spinach.21
Company who they like around
Best kept as a bonded pair that has formed naturally, often by growing up a small group of youngsters together; pairs are mostly monogamous.21
The story where it all began
Belgian ichthyologist Max Poll described the species in 1956 and named it after zoologist Georges Marlier, who collected the type specimen. It has since become a long-standing favourite among keepers of Lake Tanganyika cichlids, with several regional forms in the hobby.32
Fun facts for the dinner table
- 1
Its species name honours Georges Marlier, a Belgian zoologist who collected the first specimen.3
- 2
Unlike many cichlids, the female is the bigger partner in a pair.2
- 3
It glides along rock surfaces upside down or sideways as easily as the right way up.2
- 4
FishBase notes it hardly ever feeds at the surface, keeping to the lower part of the water.1
