Personality what they are like

A spirited little fish that keeps a firm hold on its home cave; it lives well with Tanganyikans that use other zones, such as shell-dwellers, and is best with only its own partner of the same kind.21

Daily activity how busy a day looks

Stays close to rocks and the bottom, picking food off surfaces and darting in and out of crevices.32

Keep hard, alkaline, well-filtered water and change part of it regularly; avoid mixing with other Julidochromis species.2

Home where they are happiest

About 70 litres (75 x 30 cm base) for a single pair; rock caves over sand. Temperature about 22-27 C, pH 7.5-9.0, hardness around 9-25 dGH.21

Food basics what goes in the bowl

Omnivore that scrapes tiny animals and crustaceans from rocks; feed live and frozen foods with quality dried food and some plant matter.321

Company who they like around

Kept as a pair. In the wild it lives in small family groups where a breeding pair is helped by up to six younger fish that defend the nest.23

The story where it all began

George Albert Boulenger described the golden julie in 1898, and its name comes from the Latin for decorated. It was one of the earliest Julidochromis known to science and remains a classic dwarf cichlid in Tanganyika aquaria.13
