Coat and looks how to spot one

dense double coat, medium to long

A strong, athletic working-dog build wrapped in a thick double coat. Coats are rarely one solid colour and usually show two or more shades, often with Husky-style facial markings or Shepherd-style saddle patterns, depending on which parent shows through.145

Coloursblack and tanblack and fawnblack, silver and tanwhitecreambrownredblue14

Personality what they are like

An intelligent, outgoing and loyal dog with a strong urge to work and play. It usually adores its family and learns well with reward-based training, though some inherit an independent streak from either side. Personality varies with the parent it takes after.145

Daily activity how busy a day looks

High. Plan on one to two hours a day, including energetic outings such as hiking, running or dog sports, plus brain games.41

Grooming and care the hands-on bits

Brush a few times a week with a pin brush and metal comb, more often when the coat blows seasonally. Bathe only when needed, and keep up nail trims, ear checks and tooth brushing.14

Home where they are happiest

Adapts to different homes as long as it gets plenty of exercise and mental work; happiest with access to open spaces. The thick coat makes it comfortable in cold weather.1

Food basics what goes in the bowl

A complete food suited to a medium to large, high-energy dog, with portions matched to age and activity. Ask your vet to help set amounts.1

Company who they like around

A people-oriented dog that thrives on being part of the family. Early socialisation helps it get on with children and other pets; it may like to chase cats.14

The story where it all began

The Shepsky began as a designer cross combining the German Shepherd's working ability with the Husky's stamina and looks. The Shepherd parent was founded in Germany in 1899 as a sheep-herding breed, and the Husky was developed by the Chukchi people of Siberia as a sled dog.1423

Fun facts for the dinner table

  1. 1

Shepskies can shine at agility, tracking and even skijoring, where a dog tows a person on skis.4

  2. 2

The German Shepherd breed traces back to one dog, Horand von Grafrath, bought by Max von Stephanitz in 1899.2

  3. 3

Siberian Huskies can have blue, brown or two different coloured eyes, and Shepskies sometimes inherit this.3

  4. 4

Shepskies have been trained as service dogs.4

Recognised by the official bits

The Royal Kennel Club
Crossbreeds are not recognised as pedigree breeds, but they can be registered on the Activity Register and take part in agility, obedience and similar events.5
