Looks how to spot one

Feathered; compact, stocky parrot with a large head and short square tail

A charcoal-grey head, bright yellow eyes and a grey bill sit above a green back and throat. The green chest ends in a V shape over yellow to orange underparts, which looks like the bird is wearing a waistcoat. The orange-bellied form (versteri) shows deeper orange-red below. Sexes look alike, though the female's V tends to be longer.213

Personality what they are like

Sweet-natured and people-focused, often happiest perched near its favourite person. It whistles and clucks more than it screams, and while not a star talker, some individuals learn dozens of words.32

Daily activity how busy a day looks

Active and fond of chewing. Needs daily exercise out of the cage and a steady supply of destructible toys to stay fit and busy.3

Grooming and care the hands-on bits

Offer bathing water, toys of different kinds (to shred, to forage in, to preen) and perches of varied texture and thickness.1

Home where they are happiest

A roomy indoor cage (the World Parrot Trust suggests at least 1.8 m long) or a walk-in aviary of about 2.1 m, with horizontal bars for climbing.14

Food basics what goes in the bowl

Wild birds eat figs, baobab and other fruits, seeds, buds and flowers. For pets, a pellet base with fresh vegetables, fruit, cooked legumes and a few nuts works well; portions matter because it is a keen eater.13

Company who they like around

Highly social with its humans and does not need a second Senegal for company, but it wants as much attention as the family can give.3

The story where it all began

Carl Linnaeus described the Senegal parrot in 1766, naming it after the region where it was collected. Hand-reared birds are easy to breed in captivity and it has become the best known of the Poicephalus parrots kept as pets.23

Owner questions the things everyone asks

How often should I feed my Senegal Parrot?

Offer fresh food and water daily. Furry Diary's starting plan suggests refreshing food and water every day. Follow the food label for portion sizes and check with your vet for your bird's specific needs.3 Furry Diary plan

What does a Senegal Parrot eat, and what should it never eat?

A pellet base with fresh vegetables, fruit, cooked legumes, and a few nuts is ideal. Avoid avocado, chocolate, caffeine, alcohol, and high-fat or salty foods. Always ask your vet for a complete list of unsafe foods.31

How much space does a Senegal Parrot need?

A roomy indoor cage at least 1.8 m long, or a walk-in aviary about 2.1 m, with horizontal bars for climbing. Provide daily out-of-cage time, about 2 hours a day as suggested by Furry Diary's plan.14 Furry Diary plan

What temperature, light or water does a Senegal Parrot need?

Keep the cage in a warm, draft-free room with natural daylight cycles. Offer bathing water every few days, as Furry Diary suggests every 3 days. Avoid extreme temperatures and direct sunlight exposure.1 Furry Diary plan

How often should I clean a Senegal Parrot's home?

Change the cage liner every 2 days and do a full clean weekly, as per Furry Diary's plan. Regular cleaning helps prevent illness. Use bird-safe cleaners and rinse thoroughly. Furry Diary plan

Can a Senegal Parrot live with others?

Senegal Parrots are highly social with humans and don't need another Senegal for company, but they thrive on attention. Introducing other birds requires careful supervision and slow introductions. Consult a good breeder or vet for advice.3

How long does a Senegal Parrot live?

With proper care, a Senegal Parrot can live between 20 and 50 years. This long lifespan means a long-term commitment to their care and companionship.321

Can I handle a Senegal Parrot?

Yes, they are sweet-natured and people-focused, often happiest perched near their favourite person. Handle gently and regularly to build trust. Always supervise interactions with children or other pets.32
