Looks how to spot one
Smooth to lightly keeled scales; long, agile body
A long, athletic rat snake with a yellow to tan ground colour covered in irregular brown to olive-green blotches. The head is usually plain grey, and some animals carry flecks of red or orange. Snakes from the north of the range tend to be darker, those from the south more yellow.1
Personality what they are like
Rather shy, but individuals vary a lot. Some youngsters are calm while others are jumpy, and a nervous snake may rattle its tail or release musk. Captive-bred snakes are generally the more relaxed ones.13
Daily activity how busy a day looks
An agile climber that also swims well and spends a good deal of time off the ground, so it appreciates climbing branches as well as floor space.31
Home where they are happiest
Very adaptable in the wild, living in swamps, forests, grassland, farmland and even towns. A secure, escape-proof enclosure with hides and climbing branches suits its active, arboreal style.13
Food basics what goes in the bowl
Carnivore with a hearty appetite that kills by constriction. Rodents are the main food, with birds, eggs, frogs and lizards taken in the wild; captive snakes are usually fed rodents.134
Company who they like around
Solitary by nature and best kept on its own.4
The story where it all began
Baird and Girard described the Texas rat snake in 1853 as Scotophis lindheimerii, from a specimen collected at New Braunfels, Texas. It was long known as Elaphe obsoleta lindheimeri and is now usually placed in Pantherophis. In 2022 Hillis recommended keeping it as a subspecies because the rat snake forms blend into one another where they meet.12

Owner questions the things everyone asks
How often should I feed my Texas Rat Snake?
Feeding frequency depends on your snake's age and size. Young snakes typically eat every 5-7 days, while adults can be fed every 10-14 days. Furry Diary's starting plan suggests weighing your snake monthly and adjusting based on its condition.134 Furry Diary plan
What does a Texas Rat Snake eat, and what should it never eat?
Your Texas Rat Snake is a carnivore with a hearty appetite, and in captivity it is usually fed rodents like mice or rats. Never feed it live prey that could injure it, and avoid any human food or insects, as these are not part of its natural diet.134
How much space does a Texas Rat Snake need?
This agile climber needs a secure, escape-proof enclosure with both floor space and climbing branches. A 40-gallon tank or larger is a good starting point for an adult, as it spends a good deal of time off the ground.13
What temperature, light or water does a Texas Rat Snake need?
Provide a warm side of 85-90°F and a cool side of 70-75°F, with a basking spot. No special UVB lighting is required, but a day-night cycle is helpful. Always have fresh water available, and check humidity every two days as per Furry Diary's plan.13 Furry Diary plan
How often should I clean a Texas Rat Snake's home?
Spot clean the enclosure every two days to remove waste, and do a full clean once a month. Furry Diary's plan also suggests noting each shed in your diary, as a complete shed is a good sign of health. Furry Diary plan
Can a Texas Rat Snake live with others?
No, this snake is solitary by nature and is best kept on its own. Housing it with others can cause stress or injury.4
How long does a Texas Rat Snake live?
With good care, a Texas Rat Snake can live between 15 and 34 years, so be ready for a long-term commitment. Regular vet check-ups with an exotic-pet vet help ensure a long, healthy life.34 Furry Diary plan
Can I handle a Texas Rat Snake?
Yes, but remember they are rather shy and individuals vary a lot. Captive-bred snakes are generally more relaxed, and with gentle, regular handling, most become calm and enjoyable to hold.13
