Looks how to spot one

Broad, heavy shell with grooved scutes

A massive, flat-topped tortoise with deep growth rings on each shell plate and big, cone-shaped spurs on the back of the thighs. The shell is brown to yellow, the underside ivory, and the skin a warm golden to sandy brown.12

Coloursbrown to yellow carapaceivory plastrongolden to yellow-brown skin2

Personality what they are like

Calm and placid with people. It is not especially social, but many learn to accept gentle attention such as shell scratches. Males can be very territorial with each other.132

Daily activity how busy a day looks

A powerful digger that naturally burrows to escape heat, and is most active around dawn and dusk. Adults are strong enough to push through weak walls.23

Grooming and care the hands-on bits

Needs a hot basking area of about 38-41 C, a warm zone of 27-32 C and nights of 21-23 C. Indoors it needs strong UVB for 11-13 hours a day. Hatchlings need high humidity and daily warm soaks, and clean drinking water should always be available.3

Home where they are happiest

Grows too big for indoor housing: adults need roughly 28 square metres (300 sq ft) or more, which in practice means a secure outdoor pen. Walls should be solid (cinder block rather than wood) and sunk about 30 cm into the ground. Give deep, diggable soil plus both sun and shade.3

Food basics what goes in the bowl

Grazing herbivore that does best on high-fibre, low-protein food: grasses, hay and weeds such as dandelion and clover, plus opuntia cactus pads and hibiscus. Fruit and spinach are left out. Offer a cuttlebone or calcium supplement.31

Company who they like around

Naturally solitary and content living alone. Adult males should not be housed together.32

The story where it all began

John Frederick Miller described the species in 1779 as Testudo sulcata, naming it for the furrows on its shell. It is the largest mainland tortoise in Africa and has become one of the best-known large tortoises in captivity.1

Fun facts for the dinner table

  1. 1

'Sulcata' comes from the Latin sulcus, meaning furrow, after the deep grooves on its shell plates.1

  2. 2

It is the third-largest tortoise in the world, after the Galapagos and Aldabra giant tortoises.1

  3. 3

Wild sulcatas can dig burrows up to 15 metres long to escape the desert heat.1

  4. 4

In Senegal the tortoise is a symbol of happiness, fertility and long life.2

  5. 5

A hatchling is only about 4-6 cm long, a tiny start for such a large animal.2
