Looks how to spot one

scales

A medium-sized lizard with a robust body and a notably long, spiny tail that it uses for defence and to block burrow entrances. The head is broad and the ear openings have a few enlarged scales on the front edge. Small spines also run along the upper thighs.4

Personality what they are like

Generally mild-tempered and friendly, though they can deliver a painful bite if frightened. Adults are fairly sedentary, spending much of the day basking and eating, while juveniles are very active and excellent climbers. They are best kept singly or in carefully monitored pairs, as males are territorial.657

Daily activity how busy a day looks

Diurnal and needs a strong basking spot. Provide a thermal gradient with a hot end reaching over 130°F (54°C) and a cool end below 90°F (32°C). Night temperatures can drop to the high 60s or low 70s°F (around 20°C). Artificial burrows and hiding places are essential for security.7

Grooming and care the hands-on bits

Keep the enclosure dry, as these lizards come from areas with only 1-2 inches of rain per year. Substrate can be paper, soil or sand. A water bowl can be provided but must not spill and raise humidity. Shedding is normal and usually uneventful with proper humidity.7

Home where they are happiest

A desert setup with a large enclosure (e.g. 2 ft x 4 ft) heated by an overhead spotlight. Provide a temperature gradient as described. Use artificial burrows such as snake hide boxes or upside-down plastic plant saucers. Keep substrate dry. CITES Appendix II: proof of lawful origin required.71

Food basics what goes in the bowl

Primarily herbivorous. Offer a large variety of dark leafy greens (kale, collard, turnip greens), vegetables (carrots, sweet potato, squash, peas, beans), sprouted lentils, and occasional fruit. Dust with a calcium supplement once weekly for non-breeding adults. Insects (crickets, mealworms) can be offered once or twice a week but with caution, as too much animal protein may cause health issues.75

Company who they like around

Best housed alone or as a single male with several females, but watch for signs of stress. Males are territorial and should not be kept together. CITES Appendix II: legal restrictions apply; ensure captive-bred origin.761

The story where it all began

The ornate uromastyx has been known to science since 1827, when it was first described by Heyden. Its Latin name 'ornata' means 'decorated' or 'ornamented', referring to its vivid colours. In the wild it inhabits some of the driest deserts on Earth, with less than 20 mm of rain per year. It has been kept in captivity for decades, though much of its husbandry is still experimental. It is now bred in captivity and is considered a rewarding vegetarian lizard for intermediate keepers.8276

Recognised by the official bits

CITES
Listed on Appendix II (EU Annex B); keepers must hold proof of lawful origin.1

The care rhythm Furry Diary remembers it for you

A typical home-care rhythm for a Ornate Uromastyx. It is our own starting plan, not a vet's advice, and you can change every line in the app.

Treats they will love homemade and simple

Bearded Dragon Flower Salad

Edible flowers provide variety and enrichment, and are a safe occasional treat when sourced from pesticide-free suppliers.

You need

  • 1-2 pesticide-free dandelion flowers
  • 1-2 pesticide-free hibiscus flowers
  • 1-2 pesticide-free nasturtium flowers
  • 1-2 pesticide-free rose petals

How

  1. Gently rinse the flowers in cool water to remove any dust or debris.
  2. Pat dry with a clean paper towel.
  3. Tear or chop the flowers into small, bite-sized pieces appropriate for your dragon's size.
  4. Offer as a treat once or twice a week, replacing any uneaten portions after a few hours.

How much: A small pinch of mixed flower pieces per serving, no more than once or twice a week.

Recipe from VCA Animal Hospitals

Not veterinary advice. Check with your vet first if your pet has allergies, a health condition, is on a special diet or is pregnant. Treats should stay a small part of the daily food. Cut to a safe size and supervise.

Owner questions the things everyone asks

How often should I feed my Ornate Uromastyx?

Feed your Ornate Uromastyx daily with fresh greens and vegetables. Juveniles may need more frequent meals, while adults can be fed once a day. Furry Diary's starting plan is to offer food daily, adjusting based on your pet's age and appetite.7 Furry Diary plan

What does an Ornate Uromastyx eat, and what should it never eat?

They eat dark leafy greens like kale and collard greens, plus vegetables such as carrots and squash, with occasional fruit. Avoid feeding insects too often, as too much animal protein can cause health issues. Never give them foods high in oxalates or phosphorus without balancing with calcium.75

How much space does an Ornate Uromastyx need?

A large enclosure of at least 2 feet by 4 feet is recommended for an adult. This gives room for a proper temperature gradient and hiding spots. A bigger space is always better for their activity and well-being.7

What temperature, light or water does an Ornate Uromastyx need?

Provide a basking spot over 130°F (54°C) and a cool end below 90°F (32°C), with night temps in the high 60s to low 70s°F. Use a strong overhead spotlight and UVB lighting. Keep the enclosure dry; a water bowl is okay but must not raise humidity.7 Furry Diary plan

How often should I clean an Ornate Uromastyx's home?

Spot clean daily to remove waste and uneaten food. A full clean of the enclosure is recommended every 30 days. Furry Diary's plan includes daily spot cleaning and a monthly deep clean. Furry Diary plan

Can an Ornate Uromastyx live with others?

They are best housed alone or as a single male with several females, but watch for stress. Males are territorial and should never be kept together. Always monitor for signs of aggression.76

How long does an Ornate Uromastyx live?

With proper care, they can live between 15 and 25 years. This is a long-term commitment, so be prepared for many years of companionship.15

Can I handle an Ornate Uromastyx?

They are generally mild-tempered and can be handled gently, but they may bite if frightened. Juveniles are very active, while adults are more sedentary. Always support their body and avoid sudden movements.657
