Looks how to spot one

Smooth, glossy scales; slender constrictor

Personality what they are like

Typically mild-natured and tolerant of handling once settled. Mostly active at night and spends a lot of time hidden. Hatchlings can be nervous and quick, calming down as they grow.31

Daily activity how busy a day looks

A mostly ground-dwelling, nocturnal hunter that enjoys exploring and burrowing. Plenty of hides and a deep substrate give it enrichment.13

Grooming and care the hands-on bits

Allow about two weeks to settle in and wait until it is feeding regularly before handling. Start with sessions of up to 5 minutes, at most once a day. Offer a humid hide with damp sphagnum moss for shedding.3

Home where they are happiest

Minimum enclosure about 120 x 60 x 60 cm (48 x 24 x 24 in), at least 45 cm tall to fit lighting and heating. Basking surface 29-32 °C, cool side 23-27 °C, night 21-23 °C. Average humidity 40-60%. About 10 cm of soil-based substrate.3

Food basics what goes in the bowl

Whole prey, mainly rodents, with variety where possible (quail, eggs, lizards). Hatchlings eat every 5-7 days, juveniles every 7-10 days and adults every 10-14 days. Wild youngsters also take insects and earthworms.31

Company who they like around

Solitary and should be housed alone, as milk snakes will eat other snakes.3

The story where it all began

The milk snake was described by Lacépède in the late 18th century, and at one point up to 24 subspecies were recognised across its huge range. A genetic study in 2014 raised several of these to full species, although later work has disputed parts of that split. Many forms are now bred in captivity for the pet trade.12

Fun facts for the dinner table

  1. 1

The name comes from an old farmyard myth that these snakes drank milk from cows. They were really visiting barns to hunt rodents.1

  2. 2

Their red, black and yellow rings closely resemble those of venomous coral snakes, a form of protective mimicry.1

  3. 3

Historically up to 24 subspecies were recognised, making it one of the most varied snakes in the Americas.1

  4. 4

Its traditional range stretches all the way from south-east Canada to Ecuador.1

Recognised by the official bits

The Reptile Database
Accepted species Lampropeltis triangulum (Lacépède, 1789), with two subspecies currently listed (triangulum and syspila). Notes that the 2014 split of former subspecies into separate species has been questioned by later studies.2
IUCN Red List (as reported by Wikipedia)
Least Concern.1
