Eastern Box Turtle
Terrapene carolina carolina
Also called Common box turtle (the species, Terrapene carolina)
From Eastern North America: from southern Maine down to Florida and west to the Great Lakes region, Illinois, eastern Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas. It lives in open woodland, woodland edges, shrubby grassland and damp meadows, usually not far from water.123
At a glance the quick version
Looks how to spot one
High-domed shell with a hinged plastron
A tall, rounded top shell with growth rings on each scute, and a hinged lower shell that lets the turtle pull in and close itself up almost completely, like a box. The shell is brown with a highly individual pattern of yellow or orange lines, spots and blotches. Males usually have red eyes, females yellowish-brown ones.13
Personality what they are like
Quiet and easygoing, a turtle that tends to shut itself in its shell when startled rather than flee. Wild individuals share overlapping home ranges without squabbling.12
Daily activity how busy a day looks
Active in daylight, especially in the early morning and after rain. Loves to dig into soil and leaf litter. Northern turtles go dormant (brumate) from about October to April, while southern ones may stay active all year.213
Grooming and care the hands-on bits
Provide a very shallow, wide water pan (under about 5 cm deep) for drinking and soaking, and a deep layer of moist dead leaves to burrow into. An outdoor pen with morning sun and plenty of shade is the preferred setup.4
Home where they are happiest
Ideally a large, secure outdoor pen with sun, shade and leaf litter; bury the fence a few centimetres and angle the top inward to stop escapes. An indoor tub works only as a temporary setup, with a 40-60 W heat lamp over one end and moist leaves or sphagnum peat as substrate.42
Food basics what goes in the bowl
A true omnivore. Young turtles eat more animal food, and adults lean more towards plants after about 5-6 years. Wild foods include earthworms, snails, slugs, insects, berries, mushrooms, roots and flowers. Keepers commonly offer earthworms alongside soft fruit such as strawberries or melon and leafy greens.2314
Company who they like around
A solitary but tolerant animal. In captivity keep only one male per enclosure, as males can clash; females can usually share. Hatchlings are best raised separately.41
The story where it all began
Box turtles are a uniquely North American group, and this species once ranged as far north as southern Ontario. The eastern subspecies became the official state reptile of both North Carolina and Tennessee, and the species is protected in international trade under CITES Appendix II.32
