Coat and looks how to spot one

short normal-fur coat; a breed defined by its markings

A medium-sized rabbit judged mainly on its colour pattern. The head is ideally split down the middle into two colours, and the body carries five to seven alternating bars or bands, giving a patchwork, jester-like look. The fur is short and easy to keep.14

Personality what they are like

A friendly, curious and fun-loving rabbit that loves to explore. It is generally gentle and clever; many learn to come to their name and take well to litter training.14

Daily activity how busy a day looks

Active and inquisitive; needs regular supervised free-roam time indoors and safe outdoor exercise to burn off energy and bond with its people.45

Grooming and care the hands-on bits

Low-maintenance short coat: a brush about once a week, or as needed during moults, keeps shedding under control. Rabbits should not be bathed.4

Home where they are happiest

The RSPCA recommends a living area of at least 3 m x 2 m x 1 m high so a rabbit can hop, stretch, hide and play; a hutch or cage works only as a base alongside a large run or daily free-roam time. Use solid flooring with soft bedding, spot-clean daily and change bedding weekly.54

Food basics what goes in the bowl

Hay should make up about 70 percent of the diet, with the rest made up of pellets, rabbit-safe vegetables and leafy greens, a little fruit as a treat, and fresh water at all times.45

Company who they like around

Rabbits are a highly social species and the RSPCA advises they should not live alone; a compatible, neutered rabbit companion plus regular gentle time with people suits them best. Harlequins generally do well with families and first-time owners, with supervision around children.54

The story where it all began

The Harlequin was developed in France from tortoiseshell Dutch-type rabbits and was first shown in Paris in 1887. It reached England a few years later and went on to the United States, where it was known for a time as the Japanese rabbit.142
