At a glance the quick version
ARBA senior minimums: bucks 11 lb, does 12 lb, no maximum (per Wikipedia). PetGuide gives 11-13 lb; Livestock Conservancy says up to about 12 lb.
Coat and looks how to spot one
short, flyback coat on a long, arched 'running' body
A tall, rangy giant with a gently arched back that holds it higher off the ground than most big breeds. The white coat carries crisp markings: a butterfly over the nose, rings round the eyes, cheek spots, coloured ears, a stripe down the spine and spots on each side.2314
Personality what they are like
Curious, gentle and lively. It is a bit more independent than very cuddly breeds but still enjoys time and interaction with its people.12
Daily activity how busy a day looks
A running breed that loves to move, so it needs lots of daily space and exercise, ideally with secure outdoor play time or a large rabbit-safe room.145
Grooming and care the hands-on bits
The short to medium coat is easy to look after; brush weekly, a little more during moults.1
Home where they are happiest
The RSPCA recommends a living area of at least 3 m x 2 m x 1 m high so a rabbit can hop, stretch, hide and play; a hutch alone is not enough and should be combined with a large run or daily free-roam time. As a giant, active breed it needs extra-large living quarters; PetGuide suggests an enclosure of at least 3 ft x 3 ft x 4 ft as a base, with much more space to run.51
Food basics what goes in the bowl
About 70 percent quality hay, with pellets, vegetables, small amounts of fruit and constant fresh water.15
Company who they like around
Rabbits are a highly social species and the RSPCA advises keeping them with at least one compatible, neutered rabbit companion, plus calm, regular time with people.5
The story where it all began
Large spotted rabbits were kept in Europe in the 1800s, and in 1904 Otto Reinhardt crossed them with black Flemish Giants to create the modern type. The breed reached America around 1910 and was recognised by ARBA in 1919.2134
