At a glance the quick version
Everbreed: about 6-7 lb; ARBA maximum 7 1/4 lb.
Coat and looks how to spot one
very dense normal fur on a stocky, cylindrical body
A sturdy, medium-sized rabbit with a thick-set, upright cylindrical body. Its fur is unusually dense, even the upright ears are well furred, and it is coloured an even medium steel blue. Everbreed notes grey-blue eyes.132
Personality what they are like
A level-headed, friendly rabbit that stays calm around people and other rabbits and grows more trusting the more it is handled.2
Daily activity how busy a day looks
Needs daily exercise outside its enclosure to keep fit and to keep its digestion moving.24
Grooming and care the hands-on bits
Brush the dense coat about once a week and trim nails roughly every 4-6 weeks.2
Home where they are happiest
The RSPCA recommends a living area of at least 3 m x 2 m x 1 m high so a rabbit can hop, stretch, hide and play; a hutch alone is not enough and should be combined with a large run or daily free-roam time. Keep the living area roomy, airy and sheltered from temperature extremes.42
Food basics what goes in the bowl
Plenty of grass hay such as timothy or meadow hay, a measured portion of pellets, some fresh greens and constant fresh water.24
Company who they like around
Rabbits are a highly social species and the RSPCA advises keeping them with at least one compatible, neutered rabbit companion, plus calm, regular time with people.42
The story where it all began
Imrich Vanek created the breed in Holíč in the 1950s, reportedly by crossing a Castor Rex with a medium-sized Lux rabbit. Slovak breeders recognised it in 1975, and decades later North American interest led to its ARBA acceptance in 2023.12
