Coat and looks how to spot one

woolly coat with lop ears on a compact body

A small, chunky, muscular rabbit with a big head, a short flat face and lop ears that hang beside the cheeks. Its fluffy wool coat is similar to an Angora's, though shorter.14

Personality what they are like

A cheerful, busy little rabbit with a lot of personality. It likes being the centre of attention, is curious and affectionate, and usually enjoys the company of other rabbits as well as its people.134

Daily activity how busy a day looks

Active and playful; give it plenty of daily playtime outside the enclosure, ideally including a secure, fenced area where it can run and jump.35

Grooming and care the hands-on bits

The wool needs regular attention: run your fingers or a pet brush through it to lift out tangles and bits of hay, with extra care during moults. Spot-clean any marks with a damp cloth instead of bathing.3

Home where they are happiest

The RSPCA recommends a living area of at least 3 m x 2 m x 1 m high so a rabbit can hop, stretch, hide and play; a hutch or cage works only as a base alongside a large run or daily free-roam time. Use solid flooring with soft bedding, spot-clean daily and change bedding weekly. AFLs do well living indoors with access to a secure outdoor run.53

Food basics what goes in the bowl

Hay and grass should make up about 70-80 percent of the diet, with fresh vegetables and leafy greens, a small portion of pellets, the occasional piece of fruit and constant fresh water.35

Company who they like around

Rabbits are a highly social species and the RSPCA advises they should not live alone; a compatible, neutered rabbit companion plus regular gentle time with people suits them best. AFLs are known to enjoy the company of other rabbits.513

The story where it all began

The breed grew out of efforts to add new colours to the Holland Lop, which involved crosses with English Spots and French Angoras and occasionally produced woolly babies. Patty Greene-Karl worked out that the wool came from a recessive gene and, with other breeders on both coasts, turned these fuzzy lops into their own breed. After several convention showings starting in Houston in 1985, it was accepted by ARBA in 1988.13

  2. 2

It was presented at three ARBA conventions (1985, 1986 and 1987) before final acceptance in 1988.1

  3. 3

  4. 4

Its short, flat muzzle is often compared to a cat's face.1

Owner questions the things everyone asks

How often should I feed my American Fuzzy Lop?

Your Fuzzy Lop should have unlimited fresh hay and grass every day, plus a daily portion of leafy greens and a small amount of pellets. Furry Diary's starting plan is to refill hay daily and offer fresh vegetables once a day. Always follow the food label and your vet's advice for exact amounts.356 Furry Diary plan

What should an American Fuzzy Lop eat, and which foods are dangerous?

Hay and grass should make up about 70-80% of the diet, with fresh leafy greens, a small portion of pellets, and occasional fruit as treats. Dangerous foods include avocado, chocolate, onions, garlic, iceberg lettuce, and muesli mixes. Always provide fresh water and avoid any processed human food.3567

Should I bathe an American Fuzzy Lop?

No, you should not bathe your Fuzzy Lop. Spot-clean any marks with a damp cloth instead, as bathing can stress them and harm their coat. Check the fur around the tail daily to keep it clean, especially in summer.3 Furry Diary plan

Does an American Fuzzy Lop need brushing?

Yes, daily brushing is essential because their woolly coat mats quickly. Run your fingers or a pet brush through the fur to lift tangles and bits of hay, with extra care during moults. Furry Diary's plan includes a wool trim every 8 weeks to keep them comfortable.3 Furry Diary plan

How do I look after an American Fuzzy Lop's nails and teeth?

Trim nails every 6 weeks or as needed, and check teeth weekly since they never stop growing. Provide plenty of hay to help wear down teeth naturally. For nail trimming, ask your vet or a good breeder for guidance. Furry Diary plan

How much space and exercise does an American Fuzzy Lop need?

They need a living area of at least 3m x 2m x 1m high, plus daily free-roam time of at least 4 hours in a secure space. A hutch works as a base, but they thrive with access to a large run or indoor roaming. They are active and playful, so give them plenty of room to hop and jump.35 Furry Diary plan

Should an American Fuzzy Lop live alone or with friends?

Rabbits are highly social, so your Fuzzy Lop should not live alone. A compatible, neutered rabbit companion is ideal, along with regular gentle time with people. They are known to enjoy the company of other rabbits.135

How long does an American Fuzzy Lop live?

With good care, they typically live between 5 and 8 years. Regular vet check-ups and a proper diet can help them live a happy, healthy life.3

Is an American Fuzzy Lop a good pet for children?

They are cheerful, curious, and affectionate, which can be lovely for older children who understand gentle handling. Always supervise interactions to keep both the rabbit and child safe. Their personality makes them a fun companion for the right family.134

How do I hold an American Fuzzy Lop?

Support their hindquarters and chest securely, never lift by the ears or scruff. Rabbits can be nervous, so hold them gently and close to your body. For specific techniques, ask a good breeder or your vet.
