Coat and looks how to spot one

Satin: short coat with a high, glossy sheen

Built like a standard mouse, but the coat gleams with an eye-catching, almost metallic gloss. The hair is very fine, dense and silky to touch. The shine comes from a difference in the core of each hair shaft, which reflects light more strongly than ordinary fur.142

Personality what they are like

Coat type has no effect on character, so these are typical fancy mice: lively, curious and happiest with mouse company. With calm, gentle handling close to the ground they settle well and seldom nip, and the AFRMA expects every show mouse to be easy to handle.456

Daily activity how busy a day looks

Busy and quick, most active at night and around dusk and dawn. Offer a solid-surface wheel, ropes, branches, tubes and tunnels, and scatter part of the food so they can forage.578

Grooming and care the hands-on bits

No brushing is needed, as mice groom themselves. Clean, dry bedding keeps the sheen at its best; spot-clean daily and fully clean the cage every one to two weeks.7

Home where they are happiest

A roomy, escape-proof cage with bar gaps under 5 mm, at least 2 cm of dust-free bedding plus paper or hay for nesting, hides with more than one exit, a solid wheel and climbing items. Keep it well ventilated, out of draughts and away from heat.7

Food basics what goes in the bowl

Complete mouse nuggets as the main food, with small portions of vegetables and fruit counted into the daily amount. Scatter some of the ration for foraging and provide fresh water from a bottle, checked daily.8

Company who they like around

Sociable animals that do best in stable, same-sex groups. Females usually live together easily; males are best kept with brothers they grew up with. Avoid swapping members in a settled group.94

The story where it all began

Satin is a long-established coat variety in the mouse fancy and is recognised by the AFRMA in every colour and marking. In 2001 researchers showed that the satin coat is linked to the Foxq1 gene, which guides how the inner part of the hair develops.12

Fun facts for the dinner table

  1. 1

Satin mice have white teeth rather than the usual yellow ones, which breeders use to tell them apart.10

  2. 2

On dark mice such as blacks, a look at the belly and vent area helps show whether a mouse is satin.10

  3. 3

The satin shine comes from the inner core (medulla) of the hair, not from its surface.2

  4. 4

Satin can be combined with long hair or curly frizzie coats to make Long Hair Satin and Frizzie Satin mice.1

Recognised by the official bits

American Fancy Rat and Mouse Association (AFRMA)
Recognised variety 'Satin' in any recognised colour or marking: a lustrous coat of very fine, dense, soft, silky hair. Also part of the Long Hair Satin and Frizzie Satin varieties.1
