Coat and looks how to spot one

Frizzled / fuzzy (fz gene)

Instead of a normal coat, this mouse wears a very short, dense layer of tight curls that sits right down against the skin, giving a velvety, almost bare look. AFRMA likens the feel to the soft side of Velcro. The whiskers are curly too.1

The story where it all began

The AFRMA first accepted this curly, close-cropped coat for its unstandardised class in 2008. It later dropped off the list, came back in 2022 and was made a full standard variety that same year.1

Owner questions the things everyone asks

How often should I feed my Fuzzy Hairless Mouse?

Feeding frequency varies with age and activity; offer complete mouse nuggets daily and remove uneaten fresh foods after a few hours. Always follow the food label's guidelines and check with your vet for your mouse's specific needs.6 Furry Diary plan

What should a Fuzzy Hairless Mouse eat, and which foods are dangerous?

Feed a base of complete mouse nuggets plus small amounts of fruit and vegetables, with fresh water from a bottle always available. Avoid dangerous foods like chocolate, caffeine, grapes, raisins, onion, garlic, avocado, and xylitol, see the ASPCA list for full details.68

Should I bathe a Fuzzy Hairless Mouse?

Bathing is not recommended as it can stress your mouse and strip natural oils. If your mouse gets dirty, spot-clean with a damp cloth and consult your vet for advice.

Does a Fuzzy Hairless Mouse need brushing?

No brushing is needed for this breed; their short, curly coat is very low maintenance. Focus on daily cage spot-cleaning and a full clean every one to two weeks.56 Furry Diary plan

How do I look after a Fuzzy Hairless Mouse's nails and teeth?

Nail and tooth care varies per mouse; provide chew toys and a solid running wheel to help wear them down naturally. Ask your vet for a check-up and specific trimming advice if needed.

How much space and exercise does a Fuzzy Hairless Mouse need?

Provide a secure, well-ventilated cage with dust-free bedding, hides, tunnels, ropes, and climbing items. They are very active, especially at night, so include a solid running wheel and scatter food for foraging.456

Should a Fuzzy Hairless Mouse live alone or with friends?

They need the company of other mice; keep a settled single-sex group, ideally females or brothers raised together. Never house a mouse alone unless advised by a vet.7

How long does a Fuzzy Hairless Mouse live?

Fuzzy Hairless Mice typically live between 1.5 and 3 years, with proper care and a good diet. Regular vet check-ups help them enjoy a full lifespan.42

Is a Fuzzy Hairless Mouse a good pet for children?

They have a lively, inquisitive nature and are best handled gently and low down, so they can be suitable for older, calm children with adult supervision. Very young children may find them too quick and delicate.4

How do I hold a Fuzzy Hairless Mouse?

Always handle your mouse gently and low down to prevent falls; scoop them up with both hands and let them feel secure. Never grab by the tail, and keep sessions short and calm.4
