Hybrid Dwarf Hamster

Also called Hybrid Russian dwarf hamster, Campbell's x Winter White hybrid

CrossbreedShort profile

From Bred in captivity by crossing Campbell's dwarf hamster (Phodopus campbelli) with the winter white dwarf hamster (Phodopus sungorus); both parent species come from the steppes of Central Asia.12

At a glance the quick version

Compact and easy to house
Active and fun to watch
Grooms itself

Coat and looks how to spot one

Short dwarf hamster coat, varying between the parent types

A small, rounded dwarf hamster that can take after either parent. Winter whites have a less woolly coat with a thick dark-grey stripe down the back and turn white in winter, while Campbell's have a woollier coat and keep their colour all year, so hybrids can show a mix of these features.12

Personality what they are like

Like its parent species it is a lively little hamster, mostly active in the evening and at night, that does best with calm, low-down handling.3

Daily activity how busy a day looks

Needs room to run, climb and dig, a solid exercise wheel sized for dwarf hamsters, and tunnels and hides to explore.34

Grooming and care the hands-on bits

Self-grooming, so no brushing needed. Check daily, spot-clean soiled bedding, remove stale hoarded food and keep a regular light and dark routine.34

Home where they are happiest

A roomy, secure enclosure away from draughts, damp and direct sun, with deep bedding to burrow in, safe nesting material and more hiding places than hamsters.4

Food basics what goes in the bowl

A hamster pellet or seed mix as the base, small amounts of greens and vegetables, and fresh water at all times, ideally from a bottle. Scatter some food for foraging.5

Company who they like around

Dwarf hamsters can sometimes share a home if they are young littermates kept together from the start, but they are also happy alone; newcomers should not be added later and any fighting means separating them for good.63

The story where it all began

Campbell's and winter white dwarf hamsters were long sold under shared names such as Russian dwarf or Djungarian, which led to the two being kept and bred together. They are the only pair among the commonly kept pet hamster species that can produce live hybrid young, and such crosses now turn up regularly in the pet trade.1

Fun facts for the dinner table

  1. 1

Of the five hamster species commonly kept as pets, only Campbell's and the winter white can interbreed and have live young together.1

  2. 2

The names Russian dwarf and Djungarian hamster are used for both parent species, which is a big reason the two got mixed up.1

  3. 3

One parent, the winter white, turns mostly white in winter, while the other, Campbell's, stays the same colour all year.1

  4. 4

The genus name Phodopus, shared by both parents, comes from Greek words meaning 'blister foot', after their padded, furry soles.7
