Looks how to spot one

Armoured suckermouth catfish

A small, flattened pleco with a sucker mouth and bony armour. Males have broader heads, thicker pectoral-fin rays carrying tooth-like odontodes, and longer cheek spines than females.12

Coloursblack and white zebra stripes12

Personality what they are like

Peaceful toward other species but keeps a home cave and can be territorial with its own kind and other bottom-dwellers. Often shy, preferring plenty of hiding places.12

Daily activity how busy a day looks

Mostly active after dark. It comes from fast, warm, very oxygen-rich water and appreciates strong flow.2

Grooming and care the hands-on bits

Keep warm water around 26 to 30 C (FishBase gives 23 to 26 C), pH about 6.0 to 7.5 and soft to moderately hard water. High oxygen, strong flow and very clean water with frequent partial changes suit it best.123

Home where they are happiest

Seriously Fish gives a minimum base of 60 x 30 cm, while Wikipedia suggests about 115 litres (30 US gallons). Provide rocks, caves and slate stacks, with sand or smooth gravel.12

Food basics what goes in the bowl

Leans toward meaty foods: bloodworm, brine shrimp, chopped mussel and prawn, plus quality sinking pellets. Young fish may graze algae wafers or vegetables, but adults take little plant matter.12

Company who they like around

Best kept in a dedicated or carefully chosen setup with calm, warm-water fish such as discus, dwarf cichlids or small characins. Give each male its own cave.1

The story where it all began

It reached the aquarium trade in 1987, was sold as the 'imperial peckoltia', and was described in 1991. Brazil stopped wild exports in 2004, so hobbyists today rely on captive breeding programmes.12

Fun facts for the dinner table

  1. 1

It lives in only one small section of a single river, the Volta Grande of the Rio Xingu in Brazil.2

  2. 2

Before it had a scientific name, it was sold as the 'imperial peckoltia'.1

  3. 3

The father guards the eggs in a cave, and the fry start swimming about seven days later.2

  4. 4

It carries three different trade codes: L046, L098 and L173.1

Owner questions the things everyone asks

How often should I feed my Zebra Pleco?

Feed your Zebra Pleco small amounts once or twice a day. Furry Diary's starting plan is to offer food daily, but watch that your fish eats everything within a few minutes to avoid overfeeding.12 Furry Diary plan

What does a Zebra Pleco eat, and what should it never eat?

This fish prefers meaty foods like bloodworm, brine shrimp, chopped mussel and prawn, plus quality sinking pellets. Young fish may take algae wafers or vegetables, but adults eat little plant matter. Never feed anything that isn't suitable for a carnivorous fish, ask your vet or a good breeder for a complete list.12

How much space does a Zebra Pleco need?

A minimum base of 60 x 30 cm (about 115 litres or 30 US gallons) is recommended. Provide rocks, caves and slate stacks with sand or smooth gravel to make your fish feel at home.12

What temperature, light or water does a Zebra Pleco need?

Keep water warm, around 26 to 30°C (some sources say 23 to 26°C), with a pH of 6.0 to 7.5 and soft to moderately hard water. High oxygen, strong flow and very clean water are best. Furry Diary's plan includes daily temperature checks and weekly water tests.123 Furry Diary plan

How often should I clean a Zebra Pleco's home?

Furry Diary's starting plan is to change about 25% of the water every week, clean the glass weekly, and rinse the filter in old tank water once a month. Never use tap water for the filter rinse. Furry Diary plan

Can a Zebra Pleco live with others?

Yes, it is peaceful toward other species but can be territorial with its own kind and other bottom-dwellers. Best kept with calm, warm-water fish like discus, dwarf cichlids or small characins, and give each male its own cave.12

How long does a Zebra Pleco live?

Lifespan varies depending on care and environment. For specific information, ask your vet or a good breeder who knows your fish's lineage.

Can I handle a Zebra Pleco?

It's best not to handle this fish, it is shy and has a sucker mouth and bony armour. Handling can stress it and damage its protective slime coat. Enjoy watching it from outside the tank.12
