FishBase gives 10 cm standard length and Reef Life Survey 12 cm maximum; aquarium fish usually reach about 7.5-10 cm.

Looks how to spot one

Scaled, elongated bottom-dwelling goby

A torpedo-shaped goby with a round cross-section, big bulging eyes set high on the head, a large mouth and a rounded tail. Its pelvic fins are joined together. The head, front of the body and fins are sprinkled with tiny pale blue to white spots, and many fish show four or five faint darker bands across the body.135

Coloursbright yellowgolden browngrey or whitish with 4-5 dusky barspale blue to white spotting on head and fins1253

Personality what they are like

A calm, watchful fish that spends most of the day perched at the mouth of its burrow, darting inside at the first sign of danger. It is peaceful with most tankmates and only quarrels with fish of its own kind or other shrimp gobies competing for the same burrow space.654

Daily activity how busy a day looks

Low. It rarely swims about, preferring to sit on the sand by its burrow and snap up food that drifts past. Gentle water flow suits it best.6

Grooming and care the hands-on bits

Rated an easy-care marine fish. Keep the tank tightly covered, as it is an excellent jumper, especially while settling in. If it shares the tank with a pistol shrimp, spot-feed so the shrimp gets enough to eat too. Keep water conditions stable.564

Home where they are happiest

A marine aquarium of at least about 75 litres (20 US gallons); a retailer suggests 30 gallons. Provide a deep enough mix of sand and rubble for burrowing, some live rock, calm flow and a secure lid. Keep the water at about 22-28 °C. It is reef safe and leaves corals and other sessile invertebrates alone. In the wild it lives at 1 to 25 m depth on sandy lagoon floors and coastal sand slopes.25641

Food basics what goes in the bowl

A carnivore. In tanks it eats small meaty foods such as mysis and brine shrimp, chopped crustacean flesh, frozen carnivore mixes and sinking pellets, ideally offered at least twice a day.564

Company who they like around

Keep one per tank, or a mated pair, since it defends its burrow from others of its kind. It does best with a burrowing Alpheus pistol shrimp partner such as the tiger pistol shrimp, but can also live without one.6542

The story where it all began

Albert Herre described this goby in 1936 under the name Smilogobius cinctus; it now sits in Cryptocentrus, a genus of about 41 species known as watchman gobies or prawn gobies. Scientists noticed early that it does not dig its own home but shares a burrow with alpheid shrimps, one of roughly 120 gobies known to form such partnerships. In the marine aquarium hobby it has become one of the most common and widely available shrimp gobies, valued as a hardy, colourful choice for small reef tanks and for letting keepers watch the goby and shrimp partnership up close.289175

Fun facts for the dinner table

  1. 1

It shares a burrow with a pistol shrimp: the shrimp does all the digging, and the goby stands guard at the entrance.6

  2. 2

The shrimp has very poor eyesight, so it keeps one antenna touching the goby and reads its body language to know when danger is near.5

  3. 3

It comes in two colour phases: a bright yellow form and a pale whitish form with dusky bars.1

  4. 4

About 120 kinds of gobies are known to live in partnership with burrowing shrimps.9

  5. 5

Its pelvic fins are fused together, a trait many gobies share and can use like a small suction cup.9

  6. 6

It has been known to spawn in home aquariums.4

  7. 7

Reef Life Survey divers find it at only about 1.4% of surveyed sites, usually as a pair.3

The care rhythm Furry Diary remembers it for you

A typical home-care rhythm for a Yellow Watchman Goby. It is our own starting plan, not a vet's advice, and you can change every line in the app.

Owner questions the things everyone asks

How often should I feed my Yellow Watchman Goby?

Feed your Yellow Watchman Goby small meaty foods at least twice a day. Furry Diary's starting plan suggests small amounts once or twice daily. Always follow the food label and check with your vet for exact portions.654 Furry Diary plan

What does a Yellow Watchman Goby eat, and what should it never eat?

It is a carnivore that enjoys mysis and brine shrimp, chopped crustacean flesh, frozen carnivore mixes, and sinking pellets. Never feed it anything that isn't a meaty marine food; avoid plant-based foods entirely.654

How much space does a Yellow Watchman Goby need?

A marine aquarium of at least 75 litres (20 US gallons) is recommended, with some retailers suggesting 30 gallons. Provide a deep mix of sand and rubble for burrowing, plus live rock and a secure lid.65421

What temperature, light or water does a Yellow Watchman Goby need?

Keep the water at about 22, 28 °C with gentle flow and stable conditions. It is reef safe and needs a marine setup; Furry Diary's plan includes daily temperature checks and weekly salinity tests.65421 Furry Diary plan

How often should I clean a Yellow Watchman Goby's home?

Furry Diary's plan suggests cleaning the glass weekly and doing a 10, 20% water change every two weeks. Also test the water weekly and top up evaporation with fresh RO water daily. Furry Diary plan

Can a Yellow Watchman Goby live with others?

Yes, it is peaceful with most tankmates but should be kept alone or as a mated pair, as it defends its burrow from others of its kind. It does best with a burrowing pistol shrimp partner, like the tiger pistol shrimp.6542

How long does a Yellow Watchman Goby live?

With good care, it typically lives between 5 and 8 years. Stable water conditions and a proper diet help it reach the upper end of that range.64

Can I handle a Yellow Watchman Goby?

It is best not to handle this fish, as it is a shy burrower that darts away at any sign of danger. Handling can stress it and cause injury; always use a container if you need to move it.65
