Small, bright and always busy.
Platy
Xiphophorus maculatus (Günther, 1866) and Xiphophorus variatus (Meek, 1904); most aquarium platies are hybrids of the two, sometimes with swordtail (X. hellerii) blood
Also called Platyfish, Southern platyfish, Variatus platy, Variable platyfish
From Central America and Mexico, on the Atlantic slope: the southern platy from Veracruz in Mexico to northern Belize, and the variatus platy from southern Tamaulipas to northern Veracruz. Almost all aquarium platies today are captive bred.1234

At a glance the quick version
Looks how to spot one
Scaled, compact livebearer
A short, stocky little fish with a rounded tail that, unlike its swordtail cousins, has no long 'sword'. Females are larger and fuller bodied with a fan-shaped anal fin, while males are slimmer and smaller and carry a gonopodium, a rod-like fin used for mating. Wild fish are fairly plain, olive or silvery, with the variatus males showing dark marbling and spots.3165
Personality what they are like
Gentle, busy and sociable. Platies get along with most other calm fish of a similar size, and males are generally relaxed with one another. The only pushiness comes from males, who pursue females with great persistence.5
Daily activity how busy a day looks
Active all day, cruising the middle and upper water and picking at plants and surfaces. Planted tanks with open swimming room suit them well.51
Grooming and care the hands-on bits
Low maintenance. Keep the water clean with regular partial changes and provide dense plants, which give newborn fry places to hide. Because they breed so readily, plan ahead for the young or keep a single sex.53
Home where they are happiest
A tank with at least a 60 x 30 cm footprint (about 54 litres). Platies like hard, slightly alkaline water: pH about 7.0 to 8.2, hardness roughly 9 to 30 dGH, and temperature about 20 to 26 C (sources range from 18 to 28 C; the variatus platy tolerates cooler water than most tropical fish). In the wild they live in slow, weedy ditches, canals and warm springs with silty bottoms.51236
Food basics what goes in the bowl
An easy-going omnivore. Wild platies eat worms, small crustaceans, insects and plant matter. In the aquarium they are not fussy and accept most dried, frozen and live foods, so a good flake or pellet plus some plant-based food and occasional frozen or live treats covers their needs.175
Company who they like around
Best kept in a small group with more females than males, so that no single female gets all the male attention. They mix well with other peaceful community fish.5
The story where it all began
The southern platy was described by Albert Günther in 1866 and the variatus platy by Seth Meek in 1904. The southern platy was first placed in a genus called Platypoecilus, and the everyday name 'platy' is simply a shortened form of that old name; both fish now sit in Xiphophorus, the 'sword bearers', together with the swordtails. Platies became staples of the home aquarium, and breeders crossed the two species, and often swordtails too, to create the bright reds, yellows, blues and patterned forms sold today, so wild-type fish are hardly ever seen in shops. Platies also have a long scientific career. In 1924 Myron Gordon began genetics research at Cornell University with just six platyfish, studying how their colour patterns are inherited, and in the 1930s he drove to Mexico in a Model T Ford to collect wild fish. His collection grew into the Xiphophorus Genetic Stock Center, founded in 1939, which moved between New York institutions before settling at Texas State University in 1992. The southern platy's full genome was sequenced in 2013.72458
Fun facts for the dinner table
- 1
The name 'platy' is a leftover from Platypoecilus, the genus the southern platy was originally placed in.7
- 2
Platies give birth to live, free-swimming young instead of laying eggs. A female can have from about 20 to 80 fry after a pregnancy of roughly 24 to 30 days, and the variatus platy can have up to 100.1
- 3
Young platies can be grown up and ready to breed at only 3 to 4 months old.1
- 4
Southern platies have an unusual sex-determination system involving three different sex chromosomes, W, X and Y, which makes them fascinating to geneticists.7
- 5
A major 1939 collecting trip to Mexico's Rio Papaloapan region brought back more than 3,310 wild platyfish, and their descendants became workhorse strains for decades of genetics research.8
- 6
The genus name Xiphophorus comes from Greek words meaning 'sword bearing', a nod to the swordtails, even though platies themselves have no sword.4
- 7
The variatus platy is comfortable in cooler water, around 16 to 24 C, than most tropical aquarium fish.6

Owner questions the things everyone asks
How often should I feed my Platy?
Feed your Platy small amounts once or twice a day. Furry Diary's starting plan suggests daily feeding, and because they are easy-going omnivores, a good flake or pellet plus some plant-based food works well.175 Furry Diary plan
What does a Platy eat, and what should it never eat?
Platies are not fussy and accept most dried, frozen and live foods, so a good flake or pellet plus some plant-based food and occasional treats covers their needs. Avoid giving them any food that is not suitable for fish, and always check with your vet or a good breeder for specific concerns.175
How much space does a Platy need?
A tank with at least a 60 x 30 cm footprint (about 54 litres) is recommended. This gives them room to cruise the middle and upper water and pick at plants and surfaces.51236
What temperature, light or water does a Platy need?
Platies like hard, slightly alkaline water: pH about 7.0 to 8.2, hardness roughly 9 to 30 dGH, and temperature about 20 to 26°C. They are active all day, so normal aquarium lighting is fine, and planted tanks with open swimming room suit them well.51236
How often should I clean a Platy's home?
Furry Diary's starting plan suggests a weekly 25% water change and glass cleaning, plus a monthly filter rinse in old tank water (never tap water). Regular partial changes keep the water clean and your Platy healthy.53 Furry Diary plan
Can a Platy live with others?
Yes, Platies are gentle, busy and sociable, getting along with most other calm fish of a similar size. They are best kept in a small group with more females than males, and mix well with other peaceful community fish.5
How long does a Platy live?
Platies typically live for about 3 years. With good care, they can enjoy a full lifespan in your aquarium.3
Can I handle a Platy?
It is best not to handle your Platy, as they are delicate fish. Instead, enjoy watching them cruise the middle and upper water, and use a net only when necessary for tank maintenance.
