Looks how to spot one
Scaled dwarf lionfish with fringed head
A compact lionfish in mottled browns to reddish-browns with darker bands. The broad pectoral fins are neatly banded, small tentacles sit above the eyes and leafy flaps around the head give it its 'fuzzy' look. The dorsal spines carry dark, red-edged spots and are venomous.2
Personality what they are like
Fairly calm and shy at first, it spends time hiding while it settles. It is semi-aggressive only toward animals small enough to swallow.3
Daily activity how busy a day looks
A night hunter that rests in caves, crevices and among sponges during the day. It moves slowly and does not need a lot of open swimming space.12
Grooming and care the hands-on bits
Moderate care level. Offer live saltwater shrimp at first to encourage feeding, then move it onto meaty frozen foods. Its spines are venomous, so work in the tank carefully.3
Home where they are happiest
An aquarium of at least about 190 litres (50 US gallons) with plenty of hiding places. Water about 22 to 26 °C, pH 8.1 to 8.4, dKH 8 to 12, specific gravity 1.020 to 1.025. It is reef-compatible with caution, as small shrimps may be eaten.3
Food basics what goes in the bowl
Meaty foods such as shrimp, small fish and crustacean flesh; in the wild it feeds on small crustaceans.31
Company who they like around
Adults form pairs and juveniles may gather in small groups of up to about ten; it can be kept alone or in a pair with tankmates too big to eat.21
The story where it all began
Georges Cuvier described it in 1829 as Pterois brachyptera. It was long placed in Dendrochirus until a 2023 study gave it its own genus, Neochirus. It is a familiar small lionfish in the aquarium trade.2
