At a glance the quick version
No weight in FCI or AKC standards; weight follows the size variety. Wikipedia gives 5-23 kg (10-55 lb) across all sizes; Hill's gives 10-30 lb (4.5-13.6 kg) for males and 10-25 lb (4.5-11.3 kg) for females.
Coat and looks how to spot one
hairless or short smooth coat (two varieties)
Comes in a hairless variety, with smooth, firm skin and at most a little hair on the head, feet and tail tip, and a coated variety with a short, sleek, close-lying coat and no undercoat. Both share the same lean, slightly rectangular and elegant build, with almond-shaped eyes and large upright ears. Both varieties can turn up in the same litter. FCI recognises Miniature (25-35 cm), Intermediate (36-45 cm) and Standard (46-60 cm) sizes; AKC and UKC call them Toy (10-14 in), Miniature (14-18 in) and Standard (18-23 in).5623
Personality what they are like
A composed, thoughtful dog that is serene at home yet always aware of what is going on around it. Xolos are cheerful and affectionate with their own people and tend to be reserved or aloof with strangers, which makes them good watchdogs that alert rather than pick fights. They are generally quiet dogs and do well with early, gentle socialisation.5627
Daily activity how busy a day looks
Low to moderate: around 20 minutes or more of daily activity such as walks, play and fetch, plus mental work like puzzle toys or trick training. Larger Xolos can enjoy jogging and hiking.74
Grooming and care the hands-on bits
Hairless Xolos need skin care rather than brushing: regular baths with a gentle dog shampoo, wipe-downs in between, a dog-safe moisturiser if the skin gets dry, and dog-safe sunscreen when out in strong sun. Coated Xolos just need an occasional brush. Both varieties appreciate a jumper or coat in cold weather.743
Home where they are happiest
Best as an indoor house dog. Not suited to living outdoors in cold climates; offer warm bedding, shade in hot sun and protection from sudden temperature swings. The smaller sizes adapt easily to flats.37
Food basics what goes in the bowl
A normal complete dog food suits the breed, even for hairless dogs with fewer teeth. Adults do well on two measured meals a day (puppies three), with portions matched to the size variety, as Xolos are keen eaters.47
Company who they like around
Forms strong bonds with its family and prefers to be close to them. Can be playful with children under supervision; with cats and small pets, introductions should be slow because of a fair prey drive. Early socialisation helps it relax with visitors.74
The story where it all began
Hairless dogs have been part of Mexican life for around 3,000 years. Clay figures of them turn up in ancient burial sites in western Mexico, and Maya, Toltec and Aztec cultures linked the dog with Xolotl, a god of fire and lightning who was believed to guide souls through the underworld; the breed's name joins his name to the Nahuatl word for dog, itzcuintli. After the Spanish conquest the dogs became scarce, surviving mainly in remote mountain villages. A Xolo called 'Mee Too' was registered with the AKC in 1887, but the breed was later dropped from the stud book in 1959. In 1954 an FCI-backed expedition led by breed historian Norman Pelham Wright located ten purebred dogs that became the foundation of the modern revival, and the Mexican Kennel Club formally recognised the breed in 1956 (having used it on its logo since 1940). The FCI gave definitive acceptance in 1961, the UKC followed in 1993 and the AKC returned the breed to its stud book at the end of 2010. Today the Xolo is celebrated as Mexico's national dog.3251
