Coat and looks how to spot one

short to fairly long, rough or smooth

A muscular, practical herding dog with a broad muzzle and pricked ears that usually tip forward. Because breeders select for work rather than looks, dogs vary a lot in coat length and build.12

Coloursblack and whitered and whitetricolourblack and tanblueredmerleroan12

Personality what they are like

A lively, clever working dog with plenty of courage. It moves stock in an upright, loose-eyed way rather than crouching and staring, and is happy to make its own decisions out in the field.12

Daily activity how busy a day looks

Very high. It needs a lot of daily exercise plus mental work; herding, agility, obedience, flyball and tracking all suit it.1

Home where they are happiest

Best suited to an active rural or farm home, or an owner who can give it a real job every day.1

Company who they like around

A working partner that likes to be busy alongside its handler.1

The story where it all began

Sheepdogs appear in the Welsh laws of the tenth century, and in the 1700s drovers took several dogs each on long cattle and sheep drives to English markets. By the 1940s only a few Welsh types were left, and today's dogs come mostly from the old Black-and-Tan sheepdog with some Border Collie influence. A society formed in 1997 now registers them.12

Fun facts for the dinner table

  1. 1

Welsh drovers traditionally travelled with five or six dogs, which herded stock, guarded against robbers and caught game.1

  2. 2

Unlike the crouching, staring Border Collie, it works stock upright and often holds its tail high as a signal.2

  3. 3

A Welsh Sheepdog appears in the animated film The Secret Life of Pets 2 (2019).1

  4. 4

Old Welsh bloodlines may survive among sheepdogs in Patagonia, Argentina, taken there by Welsh settlers.2

Recognised by the official bits

Welsh Sheepdog Society
Registry founded in January 1997 to preserve the remaining working bloodlines; registration is based on working ability rather than looks.2
Major kennel clubs (FCI, Royal Kennel Club, AKC)
Not recognised; kept purely as a working breed.1
