Coat and looks how to spot one

short to fairly long, rough or smooth

A muscular, practical herding dog with a broad muzzle and pricked ears that usually tip forward. Because breeders select for work rather than looks, dogs vary a lot in coat length and build.12

Coloursblack and whitered and whitetricolourblack and tanblueredmerleroan12

Personality what they are like

A lively, clever working dog with plenty of courage. It moves stock in an upright, loose-eyed way rather than crouching and staring, and is happy to make its own decisions out in the field.12

Daily activity how busy a day looks

Very high. It needs a lot of daily exercise plus mental work; herding, agility, obedience, flyball and tracking all suit it.1

Home where they are happiest

Best suited to an active rural or farm home, or an owner who can give it a real job every day.1

Company who they like around

A working partner that likes to be busy alongside its handler.1

The story where it all began

Sheepdogs appear in the Welsh laws of the tenth century, and in the 1700s drovers took several dogs each on long cattle and sheep drives to English markets. By the 1940s only a few Welsh types were left, and today's dogs come mostly from the old Black-and-Tan sheepdog with some Border Collie influence. A society formed in 1997 now registers them.12

Fun facts for the dinner table

  1. 1

Welsh drovers traditionally travelled with five or six dogs, which herded stock, guarded against robbers and caught game.1

  2. 2

Unlike the crouching, staring Border Collie, it works stock upright and often holds its tail high as a signal.2

  3. 3

A Welsh Sheepdog appears in the animated film The Secret Life of Pets 2 (2019).1

  4. 4

Old Welsh bloodlines may survive among sheepdogs in Patagonia, Argentina, taken there by Welsh settlers.2

Recognised by the official bits

Welsh Sheepdog Society
Registry founded in January 1997 to preserve the remaining working bloodlines; registration is based on working ability rather than looks.2
Major kennel clubs (FCI, Royal Kennel Club, AKC)
Not recognised; kept purely as a working breed.1

Owner questions the things everyone asks

How often should I feed my Welsh Sheepdog, and at what times?

Feed your Welsh Sheepdog at least two meals a day for an adult, and three to four smaller meals for a puppy. Regular meal times help digestion and prevent hunger signals, so aim for consistent morning and evening feeding.13 Furry Diary plan

What should a Welsh Sheepdog eat, and which foods are dangerous?

Feed a high-quality dog food appropriate for its age and activity level. Dangerous foods include chocolate, grapes, raisins, onions, garlic, xylitol, and macadamia nuts; always avoid these and consult your vet for a complete list.14 Furry Diary plan

How often should I bathe a Welsh Sheepdog?

Furry Diary's starting plan suggests a bath every 70 days, but you can bathe more often if your dog gets very dirty or has skin issues. Avoid over-bathing to keep its natural coat oils healthy.15 Furry Diary plan

How often does a Welsh Sheepdog need brushing?

Brush your Welsh Sheepdog every three days, and daily during heavy shedding seasons. This keeps its double coat healthy and reduces loose hair around the home.15 Furry Diary plan

How do I trim a Welsh Sheepdog's nails, and how often?

Trim nails every 28 days, or sooner if you hear them clicking on the floor. Cut a little at a time, stopping before the quick to avoid pain and bleeding.15 Furry Diary plan

How much exercise does a Welsh Sheepdog need?

This breed needs very high daily exercise plus mental work, such as herding, agility, or tracking. Furry Diary's plan includes daily walks and play, but a rural or farm home with a real job is ideal.1 Furry Diary plan

How do I look after a Welsh Sheepdog's teeth and ears?

Brush teeth two to three times a week with dog toothpaste, and check ears every two weeks without pushing anything into the ear canal. Daily brushing is ideal for teeth, and your vet can show you proper ear cleaning.15 Furry Diary plan

How long does a Welsh Sheepdog live?

A Welsh Sheepdog typically lives between 12 and 15 years. Senior years usually start around age 8, so regular vet check-ups become especially important then.1 Furry Diary plan

Is a Welsh Sheepdog good with children and other pets?

This lively, clever working dog is generally good with children and other pets when properly socialized, but its herding instincts may cause it to try to round up small children or animals. Early training and supervision help build positive relationships.12

Can a Welsh Sheepdog be left alone?

This breed is a working partner that likes to be busy alongside its handler, so it may struggle with long periods alone. If left alone, provide plenty of mental stimulation and exercise, but it's best suited to an active home where someone is around most of the time.1
