The story where it all began
Taiwan Dogs descend from the hunting dogs kept by the island's indigenous peoples in the central mountains. From 1976 to 1980 researchers surveyed 29 indigenous villages, and a 1980 joint study by National Taiwan University with Gifu and Nagoya universities in Japan traced the dogs to South Asian hunting-dog ancestors. The FCI accepted the breed standard in 2015.12

Owner questions the things everyone asks
How often should I feed my Taiwan Dog, and at what times?
Feed your Taiwan Dog at least two meals a day, ideally at the same times each morning and evening. Puppies need three to four smaller meals. Consistent mealtimes help with digestion and routine.3
What should a Taiwan Dog eat, and which foods are dangerous?
Choose a high-quality dog food appropriate for your dog's age and activity level. Avoid dangerous foods like chocolate, grapes, raisins, onions, garlic, xylitol, and macadamia nuts, as listed by the ASPCA.4
How often should I bathe a Taiwan Dog?
Bathe your Taiwan Dog about every 8 weeks, or as needed if they get dirty. The short coat doesn't need frequent baths, and over-bathing can dry the skin.5 Furry Diary plan
How often does a Taiwan Dog need brushing?
Brush your Taiwan Dog weekly to remove loose hair and keep the short coat healthy. A weekly brushing session is enough for this easy-care coat.5 Furry Diary plan
How do I trim a Taiwan Dog's nails, and how often?
Trim nails about every 4 weeks, or sooner if you hear them clicking on the floor. Cut a little at a time, stopping before the quick to avoid pain and bleeding.5 Furry Diary plan
How much exercise does a Taiwan Dog need?
This energetic hunting dog needs plenty of daily exercise and mental challenges. Plan for long walks, playtime, and activities that engage their mind every day.12 Furry Diary plan
How do I look after a Taiwan Dog's teeth and ears?
Brush your dog's teeth several times a week using a dog-safe toothpaste, and check ears weekly for dirt or moisture. Never push anything into the ear canal; just wipe the outer ear gently.5 Furry Diary plan
How long does a Taiwan Dog live?
Lifespan varies by individual health and care. Ask your vet or a reputable breeder for the typical range for this breed.
Is a Taiwan Dog good with children and other pets?
With early socialisation, a Taiwan Dog can be good with respectful children and familiar pets. They tend to bond strongly with one person and may be reserved with strangers, so supervision and gradual introductions are key.2
Can a Taiwan Dog be left alone?
This devoted dog forms a close bond with its owner and may struggle with long periods alone. Provide plenty of mental stimulation and company, and consider crate training or a pet sitter if you're away often.2
