Coat and looks how to spot one

short coat

A short-coated, medium-sized scenthound, heavier in the lips and throat skin than its Bruno Jura cousin, giving it a bloodhound-like face.13

Coloursblack and tan, with no white1

Personality what they are like

A keen, focused hunting hound valued for following scent over difficult mountain ground.1

Daily activity how busy a day looks

Bred to hunt on foot for long hours in the mountains, so it needed plenty of daily exercise.1

Grooming and care the hands-on bits

The short coat needs little more than an occasional brush.1

The story where it all began

Like the Bruno Jura Hound, it is believed to descend from the St. Hubert Hound and is related to neighbouring French hounds. A single Swiss hound standard covering the Jura type was set in 1933, and the FCI now records the St. Hubert type as having disappeared.12

Fun facts for the dinner table

  1. 1

It was told apart from the Bruno Jura Hound mainly by its heavier, more hanging lips and dewlap.1

  2. 2

Its ancestry traces back to the St. Hubert Hound, the forerunner of the Bloodhound.1

  3. 3

Swiss hounds of this family were prized by Italian and French hunters for hare hunting from the 15th to the 18th century.2

Recognised by the official bits

FCI
Once part of the Swiss Hound family; the FCI Swiss Hound standard (no. 59, dated 28.06.2002) notes that the St. Hubert type of the Jura hound has since disappeared. The Jura Hound variety continues within standard no. 59.2
Other major kennel clubs
Not recognised by any major kennel club.1

How often should I feed my St. Hubert Jura Hound, and at what times?

What should a St. Hubert Jura Hound eat, and which foods are dangerous?

How often should I bathe a St. Hubert Jura Hound?

Furry Diary's starting plan suggests a bath every 8 weeks, but you can bathe more often if they get very dirty. Use a dog-safe shampoo and avoid over-bathing to keep their coat healthy.6 Furry Diary plan
