Coat and looks how to spot one

long (at least 10 cm), harsh, thick, shaggy coat with dense soft undercoat

A big, fairly long-bodied and well-muscled flock guardian whose deep, shaggy coat makes it look heavier than it is; underneath it is agile and quick. The coarse outer hair is long all over, including the face, where it forms bushy brows, a moustache and a beard, with a warm, thick undercoat below.12

Personality what they are like

A steady, confident and independent-minded dog that is deeply loyal to its own people. It is naturally watchful and reserved with strangers, which makes it a serious, dependable guardian of home and flock.12

Daily activity how busy a day looks

Moderate to high. A large, agile working guardian that needs room to move and regular exercise.1

Grooming and care the hands-on bits

The long, harsh coat and thick undercoat call for regular, thorough brushing, including the beard and eyebrows.1

Home where they are happiest

Best suited to experienced owners with plenty of space, such as a rural property; bred to guard livestock outdoors in steppe conditions.12

Company who they like around

Bonds closely with its family while staying aloof with outsiders; early, ongoing socialisation suits its guardian nature.1

The story where it all began

Rough-coated Spanish shepherd dogs arrived on the southern steppes in the late 1700s with flocks of Merino sheep and mixed with local herding and sighthound-type dogs. Friedrich von Falz-Fein refined the dogs on his Askania-Nova estate from 1898, a first official standard followed in the early 1930s, and the FCI recognised the breed in 1983.12
