Coat and looks how to spot one
smooth or rough
A sturdy, workmanlike hound that varies quite a lot in looks, since it was chosen for hunting skill rather than appearance. It comes in a smooth coat, by far the most common today, and a rough coat.12
Personality what they are like
A tough, eager hunting hound selected purely for strength and skill in the field. It is a keen tracker that enjoys having a job to do.2
Daily activity how busy a day looks
High. Bred for demanding boar hunts in rough country, so it needs lots of daily exercise and scent-based activity.12
Grooming and care the hands-on bits
Low. The smooth coat needs little more than a weekly brush; the rough coat benefits from more regular brushing.1
Home where they are happiest
Best in an active, rural or outdoors-minded home with secure space to move.1
Company who they like around
A pack-hunting hound that is used to working alongside other dogs.1
The story where it all began
The Segugio Maremmano developed among hunters in the Maremma of Tuscany, who bred it for boar hunting ability rather than looks. A standard was written in 2003, and so many dogs were entered as founders that it quickly became one of Italy's most registered breeds.12
Fun facts for the dinner table
- 1
In 2009 it was Italy's highest-registered native breed, with more than 6,600 dogs entered.1
- 2
By 2018 smooth-coated dogs made up over 90 percent of new registrations.1
- 3
Because it was chosen only for hunting ability, individual dogs can look quite different from one another.2
- 4
Genetically it is very close to the Segugio dell'Appennino.1

What should a Segugio Maremmano eat, and which foods are dangerous?

Brush teeth two to three times a week using dog toothpaste; daily is ideal. Check ears weekly and dry them gently, as floppy ears trap moisture. Never push anything into the ear canal.5 Furry Diary plan
How long does a Segugio Maremmano live?
Lifespan varies for this breed. Consult your breeder or vet for typical longevity and health expectations.
Is a Segugio Maremmano good with children and other pets?
