At a glance the quick version
Coat and looks how to spot one
short, smooth coat
A large, athletic scent hound with a short, dense coat that lies flat against the body.3
Personality what they are like
The breed standard describes a quiet, steady hound that is attached to its owner, sure of itself and bold, yet gentle and neither timid nor aggressive.3
Daily activity how busy a day looks
A working scent hound bred to track and hold game in rural Brazil, so it needs plenty of daily exercise and chances to use its nose.3
Grooming and care the hands-on bits
The short, close coat is easy to keep; an occasional brush is enough.3
Company who they like around
Bred to hunt in pairs, trios or packs as well as alone, so it is used to working with other dogs.3
The story where it all began
Brazilian breeders developed this hound from the American Foxhound and the older Urrador to suit local hunting and the tropical climate, and the FCI accepted it in 1967. The original population was lost by the early 1970s and the breed was removed from the registers, then rebuilt through planned breeding with other hounds and re-recognised in Brazil in 2013.32

Owner questions the things everyone asks
How often should I feed my Rastreador Brasileiro, and at what times?
Feed your adult Rastreador Brasileiro at least two meals a day, and puppies three to four smaller meals. A consistent schedule helps digestion, but exact times can fit your routine. For portion sizes, follow the food label and your vet's advice.4
What should a Rastreador Brasileiro eat, and which foods are dangerous?
A high-quality dog food suited to its age and activity level is best. Avoid dangerous foods like grapes, raisins, macadamia nuts, xylitol, chocolate, onion, garlic, and others listed by the ASPCA. Always check with your vet for a balanced diet.5
How often should I bathe a Rastreador Brasileiro?
Furry Diary's starting plan suggests a bath every 56 days, and general guidance recommends at least once every three months. Bathe more often if your dog gets very dirty or has skin issues, using a gentle dog shampoo.6 Furry Diary plan
How often does a Rastreador Brasileiro need brushing?
This breed has a short, smooth coat that only needs weekly brushing to remove loose hair and keep it healthy. Furry Diary's starting plan suggests brushing once a week, which is plenty for this easy-care coat.36 Furry Diary plan
How do I trim a Rastreador Brasileiro's nails, and how often?
Trim nails when you hear them clicking on the floor, about every 28 days as a starting point. Use a dog nail trimmer, cut a little at a time, and stop before the quick to avoid bleeding.6 Furry Diary plan
How much exercise does a Rastreador Brasileiro need?
This active scent hound needs plenty of daily exercise, including long walks and chances to use its nose. Furry Diary's starting plan recommends daily walks and playtime to keep this breed happy and healthy.3 Furry Diary plan
How do I look after a Rastreador Brasileiro's teeth and ears?
Brush teeth at least twice a week, ideally daily, using dog toothpaste. Check ears weekly, especially since floppy ears trap moisture, and gently dry them. Never insert anything into the ear canal.6 Furry Diary plan
How long does a Rastreador Brasileiro live?
Lifespan varies by individual health and care. For accurate information, consult your veterinarian or a reputable breeder.
Is a Rastreador Brasileiro good with children and other pets?
Yes, this gentle, steady hound is good with children when properly socialized, and it gets along well with other dogs thanks to its pack history. Always supervise interactions and introduce new pets gradually.3
Can a Rastreador Brasileiro be left alone?
This breed is very attached to its owner, so it may not enjoy long periods alone. Provide plenty of exercise and mental stimulation before leaving, and consider a dog walker or pet sitter if needed.3
