Coat and looks how to spot one

long, dense double coat

A compact, strong, medium-sized herding dog under a thick shaggy coat of coarse outer hair and soft undercoat. The hair falls from the forehead over the eyes, and many are born with no tail or a short one.13

Coloursall colours and patcheswhitegreybrown12

Personality what they are like

Lively but level-headed, watchful and smart, with a long memory. Confident and a bit stubborn, it learns well with a consistent owner and settles into town life as happily as country life.142

Daily activity how busy a day looks

High. It loves work and exercise; the Royal Kennel Club suggests more than two hours a day. Dog sports such as agility, obedience and herding suit it well.342

Grooming and care the hands-on bits

The long coat needs daily grooming to stay tidy and free of mats, and it sheds.3

Home where they are happiest

Can live in a small house but does best with a large garden, according to the Royal Kennel Club.3

The story where it all began

A shaggy herding and guarding dog of the Polish plains, known in roughly its present form for centuries. After the Second World War it almost disappeared, and Dr Danuta Hryniewicz rebuilt it largely from her dog Smok, the ancestor of today's PONs. It later spread abroad and was recognised by the AKC in 2001.2
