Coat and looks how to spot one

long or medium, harsh coat with dense undercoat

A medium-sized, clearly sexually dimorphic herding dog with a harsh coat in long or medium length over a thick undercoat, and a characteristic beard. The coat shields it from the wind and cold of the Patagonian steppe. It moves with an easy, ground-covering trot.312

Coloursblackslate greyblue merlebay (bayo)brown in various shadeswhite markings up to about a quarter of the body32

Personality what they are like

A steady, self-assured and clever working dog with a calm, docile nature. It cooperates well with other working dogs and forms a strong attachment to its people.32

Daily activity how busy a day looks

Bred to trot long distances over open country while herding, so it needs plenty of daily exercise and ideally real work.32

Home where they are happiest

Adapted to the cold, windy climate of Patagonia; happiest with space and a working or active outdoor lifestyle.12

Company who they like around

Gets on well with other working dogs and bonds strongly with its family.3

The story where it all began

The breed developed between the late 1800s and early 1900s, when British and Scottish shepherds brought their working sheepdogs, likely including the Old Welsh Grey, to Chilean Patagonia, partly by way of the Falkland Islands. Isolated at the far south of the continent for over a century, these dogs became a distinct local type used on the large sheep ranches.132
