Karakachan
Also called Karakachan Dog, Ovcharsko Kuche, Thracian Mollos, Karakatschan
From Bulgaria and the wider Balkans. The breed takes its name from the Karakachans, Greek-speaking nomadic shepherds whose flocks it guarded, and it is related to the flock guardians of Greece, Turkey, Romania, Serbia and North Macedonia.12

Coat and looks how to spot one
long, weatherproof double coat
A big, strongly built mountain guardian wrapped in a long coat that shrugs off wind, rain and snow, suited to living outdoors with the flock all year.2
Personality what they are like
A brave, clever working guardian that treats its flock as its own territory. It stays relaxed around villagers and familiar faces but is watchful and wary of strangers, and it acts on its own judgment when protecting the animals in its care. Some modern breeding lines aim for a softer attitude towards people while keeping the guarding instinct.12
Daily activity how busy a day looks
Bred to spend long days with flocks in the mountains. It is happiest with a real job or a large territory to patrol rather than short walks alone.12
Grooming and care the hands-on bits
The long weatherproof coat is built for outdoor life; regular brushing keeps it in good order, especially when it sheds its undercoat.2
Home where they are happiest
Best suited to rural homes, farms and smallholdings with a large, securely fenced area. Its roots are in livestock guarding in open mountain country.12
Company who they like around
Bonds strongly with its family and with the animals it guards. Early, steady socialisation helps it accept visitors calmly.12
The story where it all began
Balkan flock guardians of this type go back thousands of years, and this one travelled with the Karakachan nomads. When sheep farming in Bulgaria was collectivised in the 20th century the dogs almost disappeared, but mountain shepherds and later conservation groups gathered the survivors. A standard was written in 1991 and the state recognised the breed in 2005.12
