FCI: dogs 50-55 cm (ideal 53-54), bitches 45-50 cm (ideal 48-49). UKC: 19.5-21.5 in and 17.5-19.5 in.
Coat and looks how to spot one
medium-length double coat
A neat, athletic, medium-sized spitz with pricked ears and a tail carried in a curl or sickle. The stiff outer hair stands slightly away from the body over a soft, pale undercoat, and the hair is a little longer on the neck, back, tail and thighs.13
Personality what they are like
A bold, watchful and careful dog that attaches itself firmly to its people and keeps a polite distance from strangers. It thinks for itself, so it learns best with calm, reward-based training from the person it trusts most.132
Daily activity how busy a day looks
High. A keen hunter with lots of energy that needs daily exercise and mental work to stay content.32
Grooming and care the hands-on bits
Regular brushing of the double coat, with extra attention when the undercoat is shedding.1
Home where they are happiest
A securely fenced yard is a must; Wikipedia recommends fencing at least 6 feet (about 1.8 m) high because the breed jumps very well.2
Company who they like around
Happiest as part of one household with a strong bond to its main person; early and steady socialisation helps it feel at ease with other animals and visitors.132
The story where it all began
The Jindo developed over a very long time on Jindo Island, where isolation kept the local dogs distinct; no written record explains exactly how it began. It was listed as Natural Monument no. 53 in 1938 under Japanese rule, and South Korea confirmed that status in 1962, protecting the breed on its home island.123
