The story where it all began

The breed was shaped by shepherds in Rio Grande do Sul who wanted dogs with better herding ability. It is thought to descend from local herding dogs mixed with Rough Collies and later Border Collies, with some accounts also naming Estrela Mountain Dogs and German Shepherds.1
