At a glance the quick version
FCI gives 8-11 kg with the lower weights preferred; UKC gives 18-24 lb (about 8.2-10.9 kg).
Coat and looks how to spot one
double coat, crisp top with soft undercoat; silky topknot
A long, low and flexible terrier with a gently curving topline, short sturdy legs and a big head crowned by a fluffy, pale topknot. The roughly 5 cm coat mixes harder and softer hair so it lies in a 'pencilled' pattern, and the short tail curves like a scimitar.324
Personality what they are like
A dignified little character with a big personality: loving and sensitive at home, clever and determined when something catches its interest. It is one of the calmer terriers and generally friendly, though its hunting roots still show in a love of digging.3251
Daily activity how busy a day looks
Moderate; about an hour of exercise a day is enough according to the Royal Kennel Club.4
Grooming and care the hands-on bits
The coat sheds very little but should be groomed more than once a week, with the silky topknot kept neat.43
Home where they are happiest
Fits well into a smaller house with a small to medium garden, in town or countryside.45
Company who they like around
Devoted to its family and generally good with older children; can be bossy with other animals, so introductions are worth managing.13
The story where it all began
Rough terriers from the Border hills were used to hunt otter and badger as early as the 1600s. The breed took its name from Dandie Dinmont, a farmer in Sir Walter Scott's 1815 novel Guy Mannering, a character partly modelled on the real terrier keeper James Davidson.124
