Coat and looks how to spot one

short, dense and glossy

A short, hard-feeling coat that lies close and shines, set on a pure white base covered in round, well-separated spots. Spots on black-spotted dogs are roughly 2-3 cm across, slightly smaller on liver-spotted dogs, and eye and nose colour match the spot colour. The body is muscular and a little longer than tall, with a long, tapering tail carried in a gentle curve.26

Colourswhite with black spotswhite with liver (brown) spotsnon-standard: lemon, orange, blue, brindle, tricolour, patched273

Personality what they are like

A cheerful, sociable dog that meets people openly and without shyness. It bonds closely with its family and likes to be part of whatever is going on, while keeping a streak of independence and a lively hound's nose. Playful, clever and keen to please, it does best with owners who can match its energy.2654

Daily activity how busy a day looks

Very high. Bred to trot for miles beside carriages, so plan on around two hours of activity a day, including some safe off-lead running once recall is solid. Hill's sets a minimum of an hour of mixed physical and mental exercise.745

Grooming and care the hands-on bits

Easy coat to keep tidy: a weekly (or more frequent) going-over with a rubber mitt or brush lifts out loose hair. The coat sheds all year and the short white hairs cling to fabrics, so regular brushing helps. Bathe only when needed, trim nails every 3-4 weeks and brush teeth regularly.745

Home where they are happiest

Suits an active household with plenty of room and access to open space for running; Purina UK considers it a poor match for flat or city living. Early socialisation and lead training help it settle into family life.4

Food basics what goes in the bowl

A complete, balanced diet suited to a large, active dog, usually split into two meals a day and adjusted to the body condition and the food maker's guidance.4

Company who they like around

A people-oriented dog that wants to join in daily life with its family and does not enjoy being left out. Friendly by nature; best matched with active families, and Purina UK suggests homes with older children.546

The story where it all began

The breed takes its name from Dalmatia on Croatia's Adriatic coast. Spotted dogs appear in Croatian church art from around 1600-1630, and 18th-century church chronicles describe them; the English naturalist Thomas Pennant named the breed 'Dalmatian' in 1771. Over the centuries these dogs worked as border sentinels, hunting and herding dogs, ratters and performers. In Regency-era Britain they became a fashionable 'spotted coach dog', running alongside carriages and guarding horses and stables at night, and that easy partnership with horses led them to run ahead of horse-drawn fire engines, which is why they remain the classic firehouse mascot. The breed was refined in England, with a first club and standard around 1890, and the AKC recognised it in 1888. The FCI published its first standard in 1955 and lists Croatia as the country of origin.23785

Fun facts for the dinner table

  1. 1

Dalmatian puppies are born pure white; the spots start to show within about two weeks and keep filling in for many months.2

  2. 2

No two Dalmatians share the same spot pattern, much like a fingerprint.5

  3. 3

The Dalmatian Club of America calls it the only recognised carriage dog in the world.8

  4. 4

Their bond with horses made them natural partners for horse-drawn fire engines, clearing the road ahead of the team.6

  5. 5

Dodie Smith's 1956 novel 'The Hundred and One Dalmatians', later a 1961 Disney film, was inspired by her own Dalmatian named Pongo.4

  6. 6

George Washington was among the early Dalmatian breeders in America.6

  7. 7

The coat carries little natural oil, so Dalmatians have very little 'doggy' smell.3
