Coat and looks how to spot one

dense double coat

A big, agile, slightly long-bodied guardian with a deep chest and a strong but not heavy frame. The outer coat is straight, harsh and dense over a soft undercoat, shorter on the head and front legs and longer on the neck, back of the legs and tail.13

Personality what they are like

A calm, self-assured and dignified dog with a deep, instinctive loyalty to its owner and to the animals in its care. It is brave and watchful, making it a dependable guard.13

The story where it all began

Romanian shepherds in the Carpathians relied on these dogs for centuries to protect flocks from wolves, bears and other large predators, choosing them purely for working ability. A first written standard appeared in 1934, and a national breed club formed in 1998. The FCI accepted the breed provisionally in 2005 and fully in 2015.123

    Eighteen Carpatin dogs were shown at the first dog show featuring the breed, held in Bucharest in 1979.2

    Its first standard, from 1934, was written by Romania's National Zootechnical Institute.1

    In 2022 the UKC moved it from the herding group into its Guardian Dog Group.3
