At a glance the quick version
FCI ideal is 6-7.5 kg; AKC ideal is 14 lb (about 6.4 kg) for dogs and 13 lb (about 5.9 kg) for bitches.
Coat and looks how to spot one
double coat, harsh outer coat
A weatherproof double coat: plenty of crisp, hard outer hair over a short, soft, close undercoat. The overall look is shaggy and natural rather than sculpted.14
Personality what they are like
Bold, jolly and self-assured without being quarrelsome. Cairns are curious, busy little dogs with an independent streak, playful and sturdy enough to be good family companions.156
Daily activity how busy a day looks
An active working terrier rather than a lap dog: plan on up to an hour of exercise a day, plus games and training. Many enjoy agility, scent work and barn hunt, and most love to dig.265
Grooming and care the hands-on bits
The medium-length coat sheds and benefits from brushing more than once a week to keep its weather-resistant texture.26
Home where they are happiest
Adapts to city flats, suburbs or farms as long as it gets enough exercise and attention; a secure garden helps, since it likes to explore and dig.65
The story where it all began
Highland farmers and gamekeepers have used these small terriers since at least the 1600s to drive foxes and other vermin out of rocky cairns, often working in little packs. The breed first appeared at UK shows in 1909 as the Short-haired Skye Terrier before the name Cairn Terrier was settled on.23
