The story where it all began
The Boerboel grew out of mastiff and bulldog types brought by European settlers to southern Africa from the 1600s, which were used to guard farms against predators. Organised breeding started in the 1950s, and the first breeders' association was founded in 1983.213

Owner questions the things everyone asks
How often should I feed my Boerboel, and at what times?
Feed your Boerboel at least two meals a day for an adult, or three to four smaller meals for a puppy, as their stomach empties quickly. Furry Diary's starting plan suggests daily feeding, and it's best to ask your vet for exact portions and timing.34 Furry Diary plan
What should a Boerboel eat, and which foods are dangerous?
A diet made for large or giant breeds with moderate to high activity is ideal, and your vet can help with portions. Dangerous foods include chocolate, grapes, raisins, onions, garlic, xylitol, and macadamia nuts, which are especially harmful to dogs.35
How often should I bathe a Boerboel?
Bathe your Boerboel at least once every three months, or more often if they get very dirty or have skin issues. Furry Diary's starting plan suggests a bath every 56 days, but always use a gentle dog shampoo.6 Furry Diary plan
How often does a Boerboel need brushing?
Brush your Boerboel's short, smooth coat once a week to keep it healthy and shiny. Furry Diary's starting plan recommends weekly brushing, which is simple and helps reduce shedding.36 Furry Diary plan
How do I trim a Boerboel's nails, and how often?
Trim your Boerboel's nails every 28 days, or sooner if you hear them clicking on the floor. Cut a little at a time, stopping before the quick to avoid pain, and ask your vet or groomer for a demo if unsure.6 Furry Diary plan
How much exercise does a Boerboel need?
Your Boerboel needs about two hours of daily exercise and mental work to stay happy and calm. Furry Diary's starting plan includes daily walks and play, which fits their need for substantial activity.3 Furry Diary plan
How do I look after a Boerboel's teeth and ears?
Brush your Boerboel's teeth two to three times a week with dog toothpaste, and check their floppy ears weekly for moisture or dirt. Furry Diary's starting plan suggests daily brushing and weekly ear checks, but never push anything into the ear canal.6 Furry Diary plan
How long does a Boerboel live?
A Boerboel typically lives between 10 and 12 years, which is a good lifespan for a large breed. Regular vet checkups and a healthy lifestyle can help them thrive.3
Is a Boerboel good with children and other pets?
Yes, a Boerboel is deeply loyal and protective of its family, including children, but needs supervision and early socialisation. They can be watchful of other dogs, so introduce them carefully and with training.213
Can a Boerboel be left alone?
Boerboels are very attached to their family and may not do well alone for long periods. They need a securely fenced yard and plenty of company, so it's best to ask a good breeder or vet for advice on your specific situation.21
