Coat and looks how to spot one

flocked coat

A unique coat made of three kinds of hair: an oily undercoat, harsh goat-like hair and a woolly layer. Together they form flat felted strands called flocks, which start to develop at about 12-15 months and protect the dog from weather.132

Personality what they are like

A calm, thoughtful herding dog that is attentive and determined at work and patient at home. It forms a strong bond with its family, is generally good with children and other animals, and is naturally watchful.143

Daily activity how busy a day looks

A working sheepdog that enjoys regular outdoor activity and having a job to do.13

Grooming and care the hands-on bits

The flocks are not brushed out like a normal coat. Once formed, the coat is often described as fairly low maintenance.41

Company who they like around

People-oriented and closely bonded to its family; usually easygoing with children and other pets.41

The story where it all began

The Bergamasco is an old Alpine herding dog that moved flocks between summer mountain pastures and winter grazing in the Po Valley. A dog of this type was shown at the first Italian dog show in Milan in 1881, and the breed entered the Italian stud book in 1891.123

Fun facts for the dinner table

  1. 1

Its felted 'flocks' take years to reach full length and act like a protective, weatherproof blanket.3

  2. 2

The coat mixes three hair types: oily undercoat, harsh 'goat hair' and soft wool.3

  3. 3

The breed traditionally followed flocks on seasonal moves between the Alps and the Po Valley.1

  4. 4

A 2018 genetic study found it shares ancestry with breeds such as the Berger Picard and Bernese Mountain Dog.2

Owner questions the things everyone asks

How often should I feed my Bergamasco Shepherd, and at what times?

Feed adult Bergamasco Shepherds at least two meals a day, and puppies three to four smaller meals. Times can be set to your routine, but consistency helps their digestion. Always provide fresh water.5

What should a Bergamasco Shepherd eat, and which foods are dangerous?

Offer a high-quality dog food suited to their age and activity level. Avoid dangerous foods like chocolate, grapes, raisins, onions, garlic, xylitol, and others listed by the ASPCA. Your vet can help tailor a diet plan.6

How often should I bathe a Bergamasco Shepherd?

Furry Diary's starting plan suggests bathing every 70 days, roughly every 2-3 months. Their unique flocked coat doesn't need frequent washing, and over-bathing can strip natural oils.7 Furry Diary plan

How often does a Bergamasco Shepherd need brushing?

The flocked coat is not brushed like a normal coat and is fairly low maintenance once formed. Furry Diary's starting plan recommends brushing every 3 days, with daily brushing during heavy shedding. Use a wide-toothed comb or your hands to separate flocks gently.14 Furry Diary plan

How do I trim a Bergamasco Shepherd's nails, and how often?

Trim nails every 28 days, or sooner if you hear clicking on the floor. Cut a little at a time, stopping before the quick to avoid bleeding. Ask your vet or a groomer to show you the technique if you're unsure.7 Furry Diary plan

How much exercise does a Bergamasco Shepherd need?

This working breed needs daily exercise, including walks and playtime, and enjoys having a job to do. Furry Diary's starting plan suggests daily walks and play to keep them happy and healthy.13 Furry Diary plan

How do I look after a Bergamasco Shepherd's teeth and ears?

Brush their teeth daily or at least 2-3 times a week using dog toothpaste. Check ears every 14 days for redness or odor, and clean gently with a vet-recommended solution. Never push anything into the ear canal.7 Furry Diary plan

How long does a Bergamasco Shepherd live?

Lifespan varies by individual and care; consult your vet for breed-specific expectations. With good nutrition and regular check-ups, many dogs live a long, happy life.

Is a Bergamasco Shepherd good with children and other pets?

Yes, they are generally good with children and other animals, being calm, patient, and forming strong family bonds. Always supervise interactions to ensure everyone's comfort.143

Can a Bergamasco Shepherd be left alone?

This breed is people-oriented and closely bonded to its family, so they may not enjoy long periods alone. Provide mental stimulation, toys, and consider a dog walker or pet sitter if you're away often.14
