Coat and looks how to spot one
four coat varieties
The same dog comes in three coat types: long and smooth (Groenendael and Tervueren), short (Malinois) and rough, wiry (Laekenois). All have a dense undercoat.12
Personality what they are like
An alert, quick-thinking and very active dog that always seems ready for the next task. It is confident and deeply loyal to its people, often playful and even goofy at home, and naturally watchful with strangers.123
Daily activity how busy a day looks
Needs a lot of physical and mental work every day. It thrives with a job such as obedience, agility, herding, tracking or search and rescue rather than walks alone.32
Grooming and care the hands-on bits
Care depends on coat type: the short-coated Malinois needs a weekly brush, while the long-coated varieties need more brushing. All shed, with seasonal heavier moults.32
Company who they like around
Forms close bonds with its family and does best with plenty of shared activity and training.31
The story where it all began
In the late 1800s Belgium had many herding dogs of mixed type. The Belgian Shepherd Dog Club was founded in Brussels in 1891, and Professor Adolphe Reul of the Cureghem veterinary school gathered 117 dogs to pick out the best type. A standard followed in 1892, and by around 1910 the breed's type and character were settled.12
