Coat and looks how to spot one
short double coat
The Malinois is the short-haired variety of the Belgian Shepherd. Its coat is close-lying, dense and firm with a woolly undercoat, a little longer around the neck, thighs and tail. The body is square in outline, lean and muscular, giving an agile, light-footed look while still being sturdy.143
Personality what they are like
A Malinois is keen, alert and always ready for a job. It bonds very closely with its person, keeps a careful eye on its home and family, and is naturally reserved with strangers without being fearful. Its high drive and sharp mind make it thrive when it has clear, consistent guidance and real work to do.1345
Daily activity how busy a day looks
Very high. The Royal Kennel Club puts it at more than two hours of exercise a day. Walks on their own are not enough; it does best with running, hiking, cycling, tracking, herding, agility, obedience or protection sports, plus daily mental work.43
Grooming and care the hands-on bits
The short coat is easy to keep: brush once or twice a week, more during the two seasonal sheds a year. Trim nails regularly and check ears about once a month.34
Home where they are happiest
Can live in town or country but needs a large, securely fenced garden and an owner with time for daily training and exercise. Tolerates warm climates well.46
Food basics what goes in the bowl
A complete, good-quality dog food matched to age and activity level; adults are usually fed twice a day and puppies up to four times. Working dogs may need more calories.3
Company who they like around
Needs lots of time with its people and does not like being left out of family life. Early and ongoing socialisation is recommended; its herding and chase instincts mean it may try to round up children or chase moving things, so supervision and training help.3
The story where it all began
Belgian herding dogs of many types worked the countryside for centuries. In 1891 the Belgian Shepherd Dog Club was founded and Professor Adolphe Reul of the Cureghem veterinary school gathered 117 dogs to sort them into types; a first standard followed in 1892. The short-haired fawn type became most common around Mechelen (Malines), which gave the Malinois its name. Registration with the Société Royale Saint-Hubert began in 1901 and the type was fairly settled by 1910. Belgian shepherds reached the USA early: in 1908 some joined the New York police, and in 1911 two Malinois were imported and registered with the AKC under the German Shepherd label. The AKC split the four Belgian varieties into separate breeds in 1959 and moved the Malinois to the Herding Group in 1983. Today it is one of the best-known police, military and detection dogs in the world, while still competing in herding and dog sports.1274
