Beagle
Also called English Beagle
From England, Great Britain; the breed was established there by the 15th century and shaped into its modern form from the 1830s.123

At a glance the quick version
FCI and AKC standards set no weight. Sex-specific figures are from Wikipedia (22-25 lb males, 20-23 lb females); VCA gives a wider 18-30 lb (about 8-14 kg) range for the breed.
Coat and looks how to spot one
short, dense, weatherproof hound coat
A compact, sturdy little hound that looks like a scaled-down Foxhound, solid for its size and built for long days in the field. The close, hard coat is short and weather-resistant. Soft, fairly broad ears with rounded tips hang down and reach almost to the nose, the large brown or hazel eyes give a gentle, appealing look, and the tail is set high, carried cheerfully and tipped with white.15
Personality what they are like
Cheerful, bold and full of energy, the Beagle is a sociable dog that loves company and meets people and other dogs with enthusiasm. It is smart and curious but easily sidetracked by an interesting smell, and its independent streak comes from generations of working as part of a pack. Beagles make lively, affectionate family dogs and playmates for children, and they have a tuneful baying voice that they use when they pick up a scent.1243
Daily activity how busy a day looks
Moderate to high: around an hour of exercise a day. Beagles have lots of stamina and enjoy brisk walks, jogging and especially outings where they can sniff and explore. Keep them on a lead or in securely fenced areas, as a scent trail can lead them off on their own adventure.24
Grooming and care the hands-on bits
Low maintenance: a weekly brush clears loose hair from the short, hard coat, and shedding is average. Training works best with short, upbeat sessions and food rewards, because Beagles are clever but easily distracted.24
Home where they are happiest
Adapts to town or country and to a smaller home, ideally with a small to medium garden. Secure fencing matters, since this curious hound will follow its nose if it finds a gap.24
Food basics what goes in the bowl
A complete, balanced dog food fed in measured portions. Beagles are very food-motivated, so keep an eye on treats and portion sizes to help them stay trim, and store food out of reach of that clever nose.4
Company who they like around
A true pack dog that thrives on companionship, whether from people or other dogs, and generally gets on well with other pets. Beagles are happiest when they are not left alone for long stretches and are included in family life.243
The story where it all began
Small hare-hunting hounds have been part of English life for centuries, with the breed established in England by the 15th century and the word 'beagle' first appearing in English writing around 1475. Tiny 'glove beagles' were kept in medieval times, and Queen Elizabeth I famously owned a pack of pocket beagles only about 8-9 inches tall that were said to sing at her table; FCI notes pocket-sized beagles in the reigns of both Henry VIII and Elizabeth I. The modern Beagle took shape from the 1830s, when the Reverend Phillip Honeywood built a pack in Essex from North Country Beagles and Southern Hounds, and Thomas Johnson later refined the type for both looks and hunting ability. In the 1870s General Richard Rowett of Illinois imported English hounds and laid the foundation of American lines; the first American standard followed in 1887, the National Beagle Club of America in 1888, and the UK Beagle Club and its standard in 1890. Traditionally hunted in packs with followers on foot, the Beagle became one of the world's best-known companion breeds and today also works as a detection dog.321
Fun facts for the dinner table
- 1
The white tip on a Beagle's tail, called the flag, was bred for on purpose so hunters could spot the dog even with its head down in tall grass; the FCI standard requires it.3

In a 1950s behaviour study by John Paul Scott and John Fuller, beagles found a mouse hidden in a one-acre field in under a minute, while fox terriers needed about 15 minutes.3

The USDA 'Beagle Brigade' began in 1984 with one dog and one trainer; around 120 beagles now sniff out banned plant and animal products at US airports, chosen partly because their friendly size does not unsettle travellers.6

Owner questions the things everyone asks
How often should I feed my Beagle, and at what times?
Feed your Beagle at least two measured meals a day, ideally at the same times each morning and evening. Puppies need three to four smaller meals. Follow the food label for portion sizes and check with your vet for your dog's exact needs.49
What should a Beagle eat, and which foods are dangerous?
A complete, balanced dog food is best, with measured portions to keep your Beagle trim. Dangerous foods include chocolate, grapes, raisins, onions, garlic, xylitol, and macadamia nuts. Always avoid these and consult your vet for a safe diet plan.410
How often should I bathe a Beagle?
Furry Diary's starting plan suggests a bath every 8 weeks, but general guidance says at least once every three months. Bathe more often if your Beagle gets dirty or has skin issues. Use a dog-safe shampoo and avoid over-bathing.11 Furry Diary plan
How often does a Beagle need brushing?
Brush your Beagle's short coat weekly to remove loose hair and keep it healthy. This is low maintenance and helps with average shedding. A weekly brush is part of Furry Diary's starting plan.24 Furry Diary plan
How do I trim a Beagle's nails, and how often?
Trim nails every 4 weeks, or sooner if you hear clicking on the floor. Cut a little at a time, stopping before the quick (the pink part). If unsure, ask your vet or a groomer for guidance.11 Furry Diary plan
How much exercise does a Beagle need?
Your Beagle needs about 90 minutes of exercise daily, including brisk walks and sniffing adventures. Keep them on a lead or in a secure area, as they may follow a scent. Furry Diary's plan suggests this amount.24 Furry Diary plan
How do I look after a Beagle's teeth and ears?
Brush teeth daily if possible, at least two to three times a week, using dog toothpaste. Check ears weekly and dry them gently, as floppy ears trap moisture. Never push anything into the ear canal. Your vet can show you how.11 Furry Diary plan
How long does a Beagle live?
Beagles typically live 12 to 15 years. With good care, regular vet checkups, and a healthy lifestyle, they can enjoy a long, happy life. Senior years usually start around age 8.243 Furry Diary plan
Is a Beagle good with children and other pets?
Yes, Beagles are cheerful, affectionate, and sociable, making them great playmates for children and generally good with other dogs and pets. They thrive on companionship and are happiest as part of the family.1243
Can a Beagle be left alone?
Beagles are pack dogs and dislike being left alone for long stretches. They need companionship and can become anxious or bored if isolated. If you must leave them, provide toys and consider a dog walker or pet sitter.243
