Coat and looks how to spot one

short coat, black with white

The old Thai verses picture a slim, neat, graceful cat with sparse, light fur in which black and white alternate, and eyes that glow gold. Modern accounts read the description as a black cat flecked with white hairs, a roan-like look.12

The story where it all began

The Sam Sawet is known from the Tamra Maew, a set of Thai cat poems whose surviving manuscripts date from the late 1700s and which sorted cats into lucky and unlucky kinds. It is one of the rarest of the traditional Thai colour types. Breeders in Thailand have tried to revive it from speckled street kittens, but so far those kittens have grown up solid black.12

Fun facts for the dinner table

  1. 1

The name is usually translated as 'alternating white', describing white mixed into a black coat.1

  2. 2

The Tamra Maew verses compare the cat's eyes to fireflies and liquid gold.1

  3. 3

Thai breeders who bought speckled-looking kittens, one of them in 2005, found the kittens turned solid black as they grew.2

Owner questions the things everyone asks

How often should I feed my Sam Sawet, and at what times?

Feeding frequency and times depend on your cat's age, health, and preferences. A good starting point is to offer meals twice a day, but check the food label and ask your vet for a schedule that suits your Sam Sawet best.

What should a Sam Sawet eat, and which foods are dangerous?

Feed a balanced, high-quality cat food recommended by your vet. Dangerous foods include chocolate, grapes, raisins, onions, garlic, and xylitol, as noted in general guidance. Always avoid these and consult your vet for a safe diet.4

Does a Sam Sawet need baths?

Baths are rarely needed for a Sam Sawet with its short coat. Only bathe if the cat is very dirty or sticky, as per general grooming advice. Otherwise, spot cleaning is enough.5

How often does a Sam Sawet need brushing?

Brush your Sam Sawet once a week, as Furry Diary's starting plan suggests. This helps remove loose hair and keeps the short, black-and-white coat neat and healthy.5 Furry Diary plan

How do I trim a Sam Sawet's claws, and how often?

Trim claws every three weeks, as per Furry Diary's plan. Start with one or two claws per session, using proper cat nail clippers, and avoid the quick. Ask your vet or a groomer for a demo if needed.5 Furry Diary plan

How much play does a Sam Sawet need?

Daily play is important for this graceful cat. Aim for at least one interactive play session each day, using toys like wands or balls to keep them active and happy. Furry Diary plan

How do I look after a Sam Sawet's teeth and ears?

Brush teeth daily if possible, or at least every two days as Furry Diary suggests, using a cat-safe toothpaste. For ears, check weekly and gently clean with a vet-recommended solution if needed. Furry Diary plan

How long does a Sam Sawet live?

Lifespan varies, but with good care, many cats live into their teens. Regular vet check-ups and a healthy diet help your Sam Sawet enjoy a long, happy life.

Is a Sam Sawet good with children and other pets?

This cat's temperament can vary, so early socialization is key. Many cats adapt well to gentle children and other pets if introduced slowly and positively. Ask a good breeder for insights on your cat's personality.

Can a Sam Sawet be left alone?

Sam Sawets can be left alone for a few hours, but they thrive on companionship. Provide toys and a cozy space, and consider a pet sitter for longer absences to keep them content.
