Coat and looks how to spot one

short, dense, plush double coat

A fine-boned, graceful cat with a long, lithe but muscular body, long legs and small oval paws. The short double coat is so thick and fine that it stands out from the body, and you can trace patterns in it with a fingertip. Silver tips on the guard hairs give the even blue colour a soft shimmer. The head is a wedge shape with wide-set, large ears and vivid green eyes; the slightly upturned mouth gives many cats a gentle 'smile'. Paw pads are lavender-pink and the nose is slate grey.12465

Personality what they are like

A thoughtful, gentle cat that can be cautious with strangers but becomes a warm, devoted companion with its own family, often bonding most closely with one person. Russian Blues are bright problem-solvers that may work out how to open cupboards, and they tend to read their owners' moods well. They enjoy play and company but also value quiet time and a predictable routine.12635

Daily activity how busy a day looks

Moderate. These smart, agile cats need daily play and mental challenges such as puzzle feeders, fetch games and chances to climb to high perches.265

Grooming and care the hands-on bits

Light. The cat keeps itself very clean; a comb or brush through the coat every week or two is enough, with occasional nail trims, ear checks and tooth care.1265

Home where they are happiest

Adapts well to indoor life and generally prefers a calm household. Provide climbing spaces and high resting places. If it goes outside, a secure garden or enclosure is advised.4251

Food basics what goes in the bowl

A complete, balanced cat food fed at set mealtimes in measured amounts, since the breed loves its food. Fresh water should always be available.62

Company who they like around

Bonds closely with its household and usually gets along with children and other pets, though it may be reserved with visitors. Suits homes with older children and adults; it copes with being on its own during the day if its needs are met.256

The story where it all began

The Russian Blue is thought to be a natural breed from northern Russia, around the Archangel Isles and the port of Arkhangelsk, and sailors are said to have carried these cats to Britain and northern Europe in the mid-1800s. The breed was first mentioned in British print in 1862 and was shown at the Crystal Palace in London in 1875 under the name Archangel Cat. For years it competed against other blue shorthairs, until it was given a class of its own in 1912. Breeders in Britain and Scandinavia built up the breed in the early 1900s, but numbers fell sharply during the Second World War, and after the war some breeders used outcrosses, including Siamese, to rebuild it. In the United States breeders later combined British and Scandinavian lines to shape the modern type. In Britain, black and white varieties were developed after the war, with the first Russian White registered in 1968; the GCCF accepts these colours, while CFA and TICA show blue only.34126

Owner questions the things everyone asks

How often should I feed my Russian Blue, and at what times?

Feeding frequency and times depend on your cat's age, health and routine. A good breeder or your vet can advise a schedule that suits your Russian Blue. Furry Diary's starting plan is to feed measured meals at set times each day.

What should a Russian Blue eat, and which foods are dangerous?

Feed a complete, balanced cat food in measured amounts and always provide fresh water. Dangerous foods include chocolate, onions, garlic, grapes, raisins, xylitol, raw meat and bones, as listed by the ASPCA. Avoid any human foods that are toxic to cats.628

Does a Russian Blue need baths?

Baths are rarely needed because the Russian Blue keeps itself very clean. Only bathe if the coat is very dirty or sticky, as per general cat care guidance. Regular brushing is enough to keep the coat in good condition.12659

How often does a Russian Blue need brushing?

Brush your Russian Blue every week or two to remove loose hair and keep the coat healthy. Furry Diary's starting plan suggests brushing every 7 days. This short, dense coat is easy to maintain.1265 Furry Diary plan

How do I trim a Russian Blue's claws, and how often?

Trim the claws every two to three weeks, cutting only the sharp tip to avoid the quick. General guidance suggests trimming every ten days to two weeks, but Furry Diary's plan recommends every 21 days. If unsure, ask your vet or a groomer to show you the safe technique.12659 Furry Diary plan

How much play does a Russian Blue need?

Your Russian Blue needs daily play and mental challenges for about 30 minutes a day, as suggested by Furry Diary's plan. These smart cats enjoy puzzle feeders, fetch games and climbing to high perches. Play keeps them happy and healthy.265 Furry Diary plan

How do I look after a Russian Blue's teeth and ears?

Brush your cat's teeth daily if possible, or at least every two days as per Furry Diary's plan, using a pet-safe toothpaste. Check ears weekly for dirt or redness and clean gently with a vet-recommended solution if needed. Regular care prevents problems.1265 Furry Diary plan

How long does a Russian Blue live?

Russian Blues typically live between 10 and 20 years, with many enjoying a long, healthy life. Good care, regular vet check-ups and a loving home help them reach their full lifespan.456

Is a Russian Blue good with children and other pets?

Yes, the Russian Blue usually gets along well with children and other pets in the household, though it may be reserved with visitors. It bonds closely with its family and suits homes with older, respectful children. Proper introductions help build harmony.256

Can a Russian Blue be left alone?

Russian Blues cope with being left alone during the day as long as their needs for play, food and company are met before and after. They value quiet time and a predictable routine. For longer absences, consider a pet sitter or interactive toys.256
