Coat and looks how to spot one

short, fine, close-lying coat with a satin sheen

A large-boned, athletic and muscular cat with a wild, spotted look but a fully domestic background. Its short satiny coat is covered in bold thumbprint-shaped spots arranged in a bull's-eye pattern along the sides, and each hair carries several bands of colour.1234

Personality what they are like

A confident, sociable and very people-focused cat that attaches strongly to its family and usually welcomes guests. Ocicats are clever and trainable, and many learn to fetch, come when called or walk on a harness. They respond best to praise.123

Daily activity how busy a day looks

High. A real athlete that jumps well and needs daily play and mental challenges.13

Grooming and care the hands-on bits

Very low maintenance: a weekly rub with a rubber brush or chamois cloth keeps the coat glossy. Sheds little.123

Home where they are happiest

Adapts well to travel and car rides; appreciates climbing space and interactive toys.3

Company who they like around

Does not enjoy long periods alone; happiest with company, and gets on well with other cats and even dogs.23

The story where it all began

In 1964 Virginia Daly of Michigan crossed an Abyssinian with a Siamese, then bred one of the daughters back to a Siamese, and a surprise spotted kitten appeared; her daughter named him Ocicat because he looked like a little ocelot. A newspaper photo caught the eye of geneticist Clyde Keeler, who encouraged developing the breed, and American Shorthairs were later added for substance and the silver colours.123

Fun facts for the dinner table

  1. 1

The very first Ocicat, a spotted male named Tonga, was named by Virginia Daly's daughter for his ocelot-like look.1

  2. 2

Despite the name, the Ocicat has no wild cat ancestry at all.4

  3. 3

The breed's spots are said to look like thumbprints and appear even on the belly.3

  4. 4

Many Ocicats enjoy water and car rides.3

  5. 5

The GCCF also recognises the Ocicat Classic, which has a swirling classic tabby pattern instead of spots.4

Owner questions the things everyone asks

How often should I feed my Ocicat, and at what times?

Feeding schedules vary by age and activity, so ask your vet for a plan tailored to your cat. A good starting point is to offer measured meals twice a day, following the guidance on the food label. Always provide fresh water.

What should an Ocicat eat, and which foods are dangerous?

Feed a high-quality cat food that meets nutritional standards. Dangerous foods include chocolate, grapes, raisins, onions, garlic, and xylitol, as listed by the ASPCA. Never give alcohol, raw meat, or bones.5

Does an Ocicat need baths?

Baths are rarely needed for this short-coated cat. Only bathe if the coat is very dirty or sticky, as per general cat care guidance. A weekly rub with a rubber brush or chamois keeps the coat glossy.1236

How often does an Ocicat need brushing?

Brush once a week with a rubber brush or chamois cloth to keep the coat shiny and remove loose hair. This matches Furry Diary's starting plan of weekly brushing. The coat sheds little and is very low maintenance.123 Furry Diary plan

How do I trim an Ocicat's claws, and how often?

Trim claws every three weeks as a starting plan, using proper cat nail clippers. Only cut the sharp tip, avoiding the pink quick. If your cat is new to it, do just one or two claws per session.6 Furry Diary plan

How much play does an Ocicat need?

This athletic cat needs daily play and mental challenges to stay happy. Furry Diary recommends daily play sessions with interactive toys. They love to fetch, climb, and learn tricks.13 Furry Diary plan

How do I look after an Ocicat's teeth and ears?

Brush teeth daily if possible, or at least every two days as a starting plan, using a pet-safe toothpaste. Check ears weekly for dirt or redness and clean gently with a vet-recommended solution if needed. Furry Diary plan

How long does an Ocicat live?

Ocicats typically live between 15 and 18 years. With good care, regular vet checkups, and a healthy lifestyle, they can enjoy a long, happy life.34

Is an Ocicat good with children and other pets?

Yes, this confident, sociable cat is wonderful with children and usually welcomes guests. They get on well with other cats and even dogs, making them a great family pet.123

Can an Ocicat be left alone?

Ocicats do not enjoy long periods alone and are happiest with company. If left alone often, consider a companion pet or interactive toys to keep them entertained.23
