Personality what they are like

A calm, peaceful finch that does not bother other species, making it a good choice for mixed collections and for beginners. It likes privacy, especially when nesting.2

Daily activity how busy a day looks

Moderate. It enjoys flying and foraging in a planted aviary and often feeds on or near the ground.21

Grooming and care the hands-on bits

Easy to care for. Keep fresh seed, water and greens available, and let nesting pairs be, since they dislike nest checks.2

Home where they are happiest

Does best in a planted aviary; birdcare.com.au suggests around 3 m long by 0.9 m wide. It can also live in a large cage about 1 m long.2

Food basics what goes in the bowl

A seed eater. Offer a good finch seed mix, seeding grasses, some fruit such as apple and leafy greens. Small live foods like mealworms or tiny crickets are helpful when breeding.21

Company who they like around

Social. Wild flocks usually hold 10 to 30 birds and can swell into the hundreds. At home it does well in pairs, colonies or mixed finch aviaries.12

The story where it all began

John Gould described the star finch in 1837, naming it ruficauda, Latin for red tail. Since then it has moved between several genera, so different books use different scientific names. It has become a popular aviary finch that breeds readily, with several colour mutations developed.12
